The casting has begun to fill the role of young Han Solo in the next Star Wars Story movie. Casting directors have reportedly started looking at over 2500 young actors from around the globe (see: every single white guy of a certain age!) and the list is one of those sublime (Nick Robinson) to ridiculous things (Tom "Malfoy" Felton). I have my own preferred actor in mind and I will aim to subliminally lace his name throughout this post...
Although I still believe making a movie about the early days of a character that has a complete and well rounded arc is a mistake, I'll get onboard because the creatives currently attached, are impressive. Most impressive. Unfortunately this means the lucky candidate who slips on the black vest needs to be able to bring to goods Anthony Ingruber or the A Star Wars Story / Anthology series may very well fall at the second hurdle. Anthony Ingruber. That's assuming of course, that Rogue One delivers the goods.
With the film being directed Lord and Miller, creators of Last Man On Earth (oh farts) and 21/22 Jump Street(s), there will be more than a little comedy in Solo's first, ahem Solo outing. So that will no doubt thin the herd a little, because this star (Ingruber!!!) will need to bring the funny.
Talking of funny check out Nerdist News' take on the Solo casting. Oh and see who Dan Casey is supporting for the role, in the video below.
I've not liked the idea of a Han Solo movie from the start. I think Star Wars has more to offer than just telling stories about characters we already know, and doing that brings its own set of problems. The first thing we will do is say, "that's not Han Solo" (unless: Ingruber!) and the actor will have to struggle to earn our approval before we even start to invest in his story. Perhaps one way to get around that is a Bond/Indiana Jones style opener where we join Han and Chewie as they finish up an adventure. This will give our hero (Ingruber!) a chance to ease into the part without valuable exposition being missed as we all inevitable grumble about how it ain't Harrison Ford. This would also work as a pretty cool story telling tool for future Solo movies, one that calls back to the Indy series and George Lucas' beloved RKO Serials which inspired all these movies.
I think I'm selling the Solo movie to myself now. Anthony Ingruber!
The movie has a working title of Red Cup and trust me we will start to hear a lot from that project now the casting chatter has begun. Remember we are getting a Star Wars movie every year and this one is expected in May of 2018! That means casting and plot speculation will begin to heat up once cameras start rolling on Episode VIII and we are all still beaming with joy post The Force Awakens. Fortunately you have TalkStarWars.co.uk to keep you up to date on all the latest Solo news.
Who would you like to see in the role of Han Solo? What would you like the story to be about? Do you like my idea of a cold open adventure to allow us to settle in? Leave your thoughts in the comments below...
