What will Maz Kanata be doing in The Last Jedi? MakingStarWars.net thinks they know thanks to an early Force Friday II "Find The Force" reveal. Read on for more...
Maz Kanata was a vital character in The Force Awakens and looks set to be equally impactful, even if she is in a smaller role in The Last Jedi. MSW reader, known simply as "GW" claims to have had an opportunity to reveal a little bit about Maz Kanata via some Force Friday promotion materials. Here is what is revealed about Maz-
So it would appear that Maz helps the Resistance connect with DJ, a mysterious character played by Benicio Del Toro, who we know to be a "slicer", Star Wars parlance for a hacker. I wonder if Finn and Rose (who we know head off on an undercover mission, thanks in part to the behind the scenes reel for The Last Jedi) need to connect with DJ in order to track down Snoke's Mega Star Destroyer in order to eliminate the First Order leader, and so they head to Maz, who is now on the move but still connected to the underworld.
We have known that Lupita Nyong'o was returning as Maz Kanata in The Last Jedi for a long time. Rian Johnson even shared an early image of Lupita on the mo-cap stage at the start of production, but it has never been clear how big her role would be. I did notice during the behind the scenes reel that Lupita seemed to be wearing a lot less tracking markers on her face this time around and I speculated that this may indicate that the role was minimal and most of the performance would be animated rather than performance captured like before, unless the tech just got more reliable in the years since TFA. You can see a comparrison of the two below.
So does Maz Kanata connect Finn and Rose with DJ because he has skills required to locate Snoke? We have been introduced to the concept of Lightspeed Tracking technology in The Last Jedi via the BB-8 playset commercial that was accidentally released. So DJ might have a way to "slice" in and use this tech to track Snoke's Mega Star Destroyer, giving the Resistance the location? The playset box seems to indicate that Finn, Rose and Rey will make it onto that ship at some point, so it seems reasonable that this is how they find it. This might even lead to the scene where Rose and Finn go deep undercover in First Order officer's uniforms, which we saw during the behind the scenes reel.
That's a lot of speculation from one Force Friday II promotional leak. It never ceases to amaze me where this information comes from, and how it seems to tie together things we have seen elsewhere. At this rate, we won't need another trailer!
What do you make of this Maz Kanata "reveal"? Are you pleased to see the character return? Would you rather she have a larger role? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
