Rian Johnson put out a tweet this morning that I think may have cleared up some confusion about the 91 second Star Wars The Last Jedi IMAX trailer we heard about last month. Read on for more...
Rian tweeted that this weekend audiences will get to see the original The Last Jedi teaser trailer in 70mm IMAX at the head of Dunkirk. This cleared something up for me relating to the recently rated IMAX The Last Jedi trailer. Check out Rian's tweet below.
Now cast your mind back to June 20th when we heard that the BBFC had just passed an IMAX trailer for The Last Jedi as PG. We also heard that this trailer was 91 seconds long, considerably shorter than the original. Below are some of the details that relate to the trailers for The Last Jedi.
Now, the trailers that passed on June 20th were 91 second 2D and 3D trailers for The Last Jedi, which I believe are shorter versions of the original trailer we got at Star Wars Celebration Orlando this year, and that these are destined for the Dunkirk 70mm IMAX release this weekend.
This makes sense to me because when your are dealing with physical film the size of 70mm film stock used by IMAX, the runtime becomes extremely important. The actual large format of the film stock means the "prints" of the feature become extremely large and very heavy and so the film transport system dictates that the film be a certain length. I seem to remember the IMAX release of Star Wars Episode II Attack Of The Clones was shorter that the regular release, in order to keep the print small. I'm thinking that the 91 second IMAX trailer we have been hearing about is a shorter version of the Celebration trailer, edited down to reduce it's running time and secure it a place in the head set for Dunkirk in 70mm theatres. This may indicate a desire to release The Last Jedi in 70mm theatres in December also, hence the importance of running the trailer for 70mm audiences this weekend.
So is this 70mm trailer Rian Johnson has been tweeting about the 91 second trailer that got us all excited last month? I think so, and I have reached out to Rian Johnson for clarification, hopefully we will hear back from him today.
Will you be watching Star Wars The Last Jedi in 70mm IMAX if you have the chance?
Thank you for reading,
Earlier reports seem to suggest that the 70mm IMAX Star Wars The Last Jedi trailer is the full length trailer seen at Star Wars Celebration. I have still to hear back to Rian Johnson on the matter.
