So the trailer for The Last Jedi has been in my life for about a day and some change and I've viewed it a number of times (I've actually lost count) and I've sat on the floor outside the gents toilet scrolling through the video frame by frame so I can get a nice understanding of what we are seeing. In the absence of a full on in depth trailer breakdown, here are some observations/insights...
When the trailer starts we hear Luke giving Rey some instructions, some training, in how to use the Force. Whatever technique Luke is using two train Rey doesnt seem to be very pleasant as we see Rey overcome, as she collapses to the ground.
If you listen carefully you can hear some classic Star Wars audio clips layered into he sound design here. When Rey tells Luke she sees light, we hear Leia's help me Obi-Wan Kenobi speech from A New Hope, and when she goes on to say she sees the dark, we hear Vader's breathing over a shot of Kylo Ren's broken mask. There is a lot packed into this trailer.
We get some additional shots of Rey training. including meditation on the cliff edge, training with a lightsaber under Luke's watchful gaze and a shot of her sitting crossed legged using the Force, deliberately or otherwise to left small stones that lay around her on the ground.
it would appear that Luke has amassed some Jedi reading materials on his travels and he stores them in what appears to be the cave we see again at the end of the trailer. I was chatting with Dan Solo this afternoon and he suggested that Luke may have discovered the Journal of the Whills and it's this we see stored safely under his protection.
There are plenty of other shots in the trailer that don't relate directly to Rey and Luke. One shows us Finn, who appears to be in some sort of healing device, another shows Poe and BB-8 as they appear to be under attack aboard the Resistance ship. Early rumours suggested that this scene might remove Leia from a large section of the film as she is injured during the attack, leaving Poe in command.
We see some beautiful shots of "mad max" style B-Wing-ish fighters flying in formation over the surface of what we are being told is the planet Crait. When one of the ship's fuselage touches the surface of the planet it's surface opens up and red dust of some kind is spread out into the air. If you look closely in the horizon you can see the First Order Heavy Armoured Walkers approaching.
There is very little of Kylo Ren in this trailer, just the one shot showing him with his trusty raggedy edged triple bladed lightsaber and what appears to be a scar over his eye. The scar is very reminiscent of Anakin's scar. It should be noted that it also appears tone in a slight different place to the wound inflicted by Rey in The Force Awakens. There is also a great shot of Rey running, in the dark, with the Skywalker lIghtsaber ignited. I'm reasonably sure that this shot and the shot of Kylo Ren are from different points in the film, but I can't resist but to place them together here.
We get a few shots of a space battle, Leia at a command table and the Falcon in atmosphere at certain points throughout this trailer, but I'm much more interested in the shot of Luke and R2-D2 standing before what appears to be the Star Wars version of Hogwarts. This must be a version of the scene we saw in The Force Awakens as Rey had her first Force vision. This is Luke dropping to his knees at the site of his school aflame before him. Presumably all of his students are dead. I am predicting that this took place whilst Luke was away, and this is after his return. If you look around Luke and R2-D2 in this shot you'll see what appears to be the burning embers we saw in the The Force Awakens vision as Luke gently places his hand on the droid's dome.
I suspect that this will be a version of events either seen by Rey in a Force vision, or shown to Rey by Luke in some manner. I suspect the difficulties we see Rey experiencing at the start of this trailer could directly relate to an over powered Luke imposing his will upon her though the use of the Force. Just after the shot of Luke before the burning building we see what appears to be Captain Phasma and a squad of Stormtroopers walking through the fire. These two shots seem to compliment each other so I'm forced to wonder if Phasma had something to do with the fall of Luke's school.
The final moments of the trailer have really inspired a lot of speculation from viewers. We see Luke standing in the entrance of what appears to be a small cave, and he tells Rey he only knows on truth, and that it is that the Jedi should end. Many people believe this to mean that Luke has lost his mind or gone to the dark side, but I think there is another option. Id suggest that Luke is of the opinion that the Sith are a reaction to the Jedi, and that if the Jedi, and their rigid dogma, should simply go away, there will be little to inspire the Sith. Could it be close to what we have speculated here before? Should the Force remain unused by Force sensitive beings? Should it be allowed to flow freely through and around all living things without having an agenda forced upon it? If so, is that why Luke believes the Jedi should simply be allowed to die off with him? If so then why train Rey at all?
There is a chance that Luke tried to remain in exile for decades and the Force was essentially dormant. Dormant until Rey was forced to use it to facilitate her escape, with Finn and BB-8, from Jakku in the Falcon. Is that what alerted Snoke to the awakening. Alerted Snoke to another Force sensitive individual that he could use for his own purposes? Has this forced Luke back into the game?
I'd be interested tho know of you have any specific insights on what we see in this trailer. If so drop them into the comments.
Thank you for reading,
