As I write this I'm listening to the final moments of the soundtrack to The Force Awakens by John Williams, a track called "The Jedi Steps and The Finale" and I have to say this soundtrack helps fresh out the movie even more for me. Read on for a couple of little initial thoughts...
I went into The Force Awakens hoping that Rey might be a completely original character without any ties to the original characters. Now, however, I am convinced that Rey is a Skywalker thanks largely to John Williams' score.
In the track "The Scavenger" we get Rey's introduction, which to my ear, contains elements of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope's score. It's a joyous track that has similar tones to some of the maestros Harry Potter work. This is music to accompany the heroes journey, and it help me refocus on Rey and how similar her origin is to both Anakin's and Luke's.
In "Rey's Theme" we get those joyful tones again, the heroic horns and soaring strings that call back to the Anakin's theme from Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace and Luke's in the original trilogy. There is no doubt that Rey is this new trilogy's hero and I have little doubt in my mind that she is a Skywalker.
Jumping forward a little and we come to one of my favourite The Force Awakens mysteries. Is Supreme Leader Snoke actually Darth Plagueis The Wise? Firstly I love that this might be a thing, that an ancient evil will be thus trilogy's big bad. Secondly I love that fact that it wasn't addressed in the movie, there's just enough evidence there to suggest that he is. One large piece of evidence is in the maestros score.
The track entitled "Snoke" is extremely similar to the Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith OST track "Palpatines Teachings", which accompanies Palpatine's telling Anakin about Darth Plagueis The Wise and the power of the Dark Side of The Force. I put out a tweet as I was listening to the soundtrack for the first time. See that below.
I'm more convinced now than ever before, that Snoke is Plagueis. I also think it will be a thread that runs through the new trilogy. I recommend picking up this soundtrack. For a start its a great piece to enjoy on its own, but it also paints in so much detail as we start our relationship with a new Star Wars movie, they really complement each other very well.
Thank you for reading,
