After taking $2,052,788,515 at the global box office (at the time of writing), The Force Awakens is heading to home entertainment platforms in April at various dates. The USA are getting an earlier release than the UK, but that's ok, we got the theatrical release earlier so I guess it's only fair. I do have one question about the home video version of The Force Awakens. Read on for more...
Here's what we know. The movie will hit HD Digital on April 1st in the US and BluRay on April 5th, with a UK BluRay release dated for 18th April, with no HD Digital date announced at the moment. Hopefully we will get the iTunes version on 1st April in line with the US. You can pre-order your UK iTunes versions here. We have also seen a number of cool exclusive covers and steel books which is nice, but no 3D BluRay as of yet. If I'm going to buy the disc, which I'll need for the full compliment of features I'm sure, then I may as well opt for 3D too.
We have some details on the special feature that will accompany the film on its home video release. They are as follows:
* Secrets Of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey
* The Story Awakens: The Table Read
* Building BB-8
* Crafting Creatures
* Blueprint of a Battle: The Snow Fight
* The Visual Magic Of The Force
* John Williams: The Seventh Symphony
* Deleted Scenes
* Force For Change
You can get a glimpse of a deleted scene, one that seems to really alter the narrative of the movie, in the BluRay trailer on the Star Wars YouTube channel, I'll embed that below for you, but here is a screen grab of the moment in question.
So that Maz Kanata retrieving the Skywalker lightsaber from the chest where Rey finds it in the theatrical cut of the film. I'm guessing the film really underwent some changes in the editing process. Here's the BluRay release trailer:
Below I have included a selection of images we haven't had a chance to see outside of the cinemas yet, along with some behind the scenes shots a that wet the appetite for what's to come in April.
Ok, so let's get to my burning question about the BluRay. I want to know if the movie will feature a mix of aspect ratios to accommodate the IMAX footage shot for the escape from Jakku sequence. If you've seen the movie in IMAX you'll appreciate how stunning that sequence is when the screen pops open and we see the Falcon barrel rolling through the Jakku junk yards.
Now, this has been done before, and to great effect. The BluyRay and iTunes HD Digital versions of The Dark Knight include multiple aspect rations with the film popping open to full screen for the IMAX sequences. I know this sounds terrible, but it is seemless, with the transitions hidden well in the edit. See below for a couple of screen shots from The Dark Knight that illustrate the difference.
I'm really hoping that the BluRay makes use of the IMAX footage shot for The Force Awakens, it'd be a shame if the only way that ever got seen was in IMAX theatres. I guess we won't know for sure until the initial disc reviews start coming through.
What about you, what are you hoping to see on the BluRay and HD Digital release? A Rogue One: A Star Wars Stor teaser perhaps? Some more behind the scenes of Epsiode VIII?
