ScreenCrush have a very interesting question, and a somewhat silly suggestion that relates to the future of Star Wars movies following the release of Episode IX...
The site asks if we might see another Star Wars trilogy after this one, and it's a fascinating question when you consider some of the things they point out. There was a sixteen year gap between Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi and Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace and a decade between Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith and The Force Awakens, so when the credits roll on Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX will Disney mothball the Skywalkers for another ten years? Here are some options:
Firstly, and most likely in my opinion, the story group are working on a new trilogy right now. We are hearing that J.J. Abrams has helped shape the next two movies, albeit very loosely with writer Rian Johnson, so they know where this trilogy will end, so it seems reasonable to think that desicions are being made about where to take these characters, whether to jump forward in time and follow new characters etc. I suspect right now Disney would be planning a new trilogy featuring Rey, Finn and Poe. That might involve Jedi and the Sith, maybe a new threat, who knows. The future of Star Wars is undiscovered country for all of us now. Expect further adventures of our new characters.
Secondly, as suggested by Screen Crush, and very unlikely in my opinion, Episode IX is split in two in the same way as Harry Potter of Hunger Games. There is no way Lucasfilm will risk pissing off the fans in this way, they have plenty of time to plan a strategy that is in keeping with the Star Wars story telling style and splitting a movie into Episode IXA and Episode IXB will simply ruffle too many feathers.
Next, mothballs. Lucasfilm could decide to shelve the Skywalkers for a time and concentrate on the Antholgy/A Star Wars Story movies. This would allow Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac to grow a little older and introduce a new younger group of Skywalkers. I doubt this will happen though. This cast of actors and their characters will so identifiable as "Star Wars" by the time Episode IX rolls around, we will want to see what they do next. I think it's more likely that the creators will move away from the "ring" style rhythm of Star Wars and and start a new trilogy with an original story.
Prequels. I guess there's room for more stories set before Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace, maybe a long time before but who'd want to see that? The Skywalker line starts with Anakin right? His virgin birth is the heart of Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace. There could be Old Republic tales, but they belong more in the A Star Wars Story section surely? One possibility is to tell a trilogy of Obi-Wan stories that will follow Ben Kenobi's twenty year stretch protecting Luke on Tatooine. Maybe Maul returns? If Snoke turns out to be Plagueis maybe he knows about Luke and despatches Sith Inquisitors or the Knights Of Ren to get to Luke and Obi-Wan has to deal with that.
I also think there's room to move the Star Wars Rebels crew into live action, cast et al. An Obi-Wan trilogy capper featuring Ahsoka Tano and the Star Wars Rebels cast facing off against Inquisitors and or the Knights Of Ren would be bloody awesome, with the series ending as Ben checks on Luke, gets chased of by Owen and goes home to his hovel. Pretty powerful stuff there I think...
