I've covered this issue a lot over the past weeks and months, so this will be a slightly less in depth look at the question on everyone's mind: Who Is Rey? The following contains minor spoilers for Claudia Gray's new novel Star Wars Bloodline...
I have just completed Star Wars Bloodline and it has given me additional information to help refine my theory about who Rey is and where she came from. Firstly let's address the issue of the enumerated Star Wars movies being the Skywalker story;
Whilst it is true, the enumerated Star Wars movies are the story of the Skywalkers, it has never been said that the story must follow a heroic Skywalker descendant. I'm afraid for all you Skywalker fans out there, that the character representing the Skywalker Bloodline (see what I did there?) in these movies is the son of Leia and grandson of Anakin Skywalker, Ben Solo AKA Kylo Ren. So it's true, the story is following the Skywalker family, only this time, he a bad guy!
The Church Of The Force
So in my last look at who Rey might be I suggested that Lor San Tekka and the Church Of The Force might play a huge part in the story of Rey. It's not a coincidence that the Church Of The Force established a settlement on Jakku (Kelvin Ravine) just a stones throw away from the young, fiercely independent Rey.
A quick recap; my theory is that after Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi Luke Skywalker and Lor San Tekka travelled looking for the ancient Jedi Temples together. I speculate that during this time, Luke became aware of the prophecy of the Chosen One and realised it was his father. More than that, I suggest he learns that a new Chosen One is prophesied and he and Lor San Tekka agree to search for this new child of the Force. To be clear, I'm suggesting that child is Rey.
Now, according the the events of Star Wars Bloodline, Luke is with Ben Solo just six years before The Force Awakens. In fact the events of Bloodline might be the cause of Ben's fall. It's strongly implied that Leia broke the news of her true parentage to Ben after the Galaxy was told by Ransolm Casterfo. It's reasonable to assume that shortly after he learns this truth, Snoke (who may be pulling the strings behind the scenes in Bloodline) sweeps in and capitalises on Ben's shaken resolve, pulling him to the Darkside and leading to the fall of Luke's academy.
At this time, Rey is already on Jakku, and has been for a number of years. It's reasonable to assume that the Church Of The Force either left Rey on Jakku in the "care" of Unkar Plutt and went to establish the settlement. Or they found Rey on Jakku after searching for her for years which lead to them establishing their Kelvin Ravine settlement in order to watch over her.
In The Force Awakens Maz tells Rey she knows the Force, even though she is no Jedi. Is Maz a member of the Church Of The Force? If she is, she may well know about Lor San Tekka, the Kelvine Ravine settlement and the existence of Rey. The exchange between Han and Maz, where Maz asks, "Who's the girl?" May have ended with Han simply saying, "Just a stray from Jakku." Which would lead to Maz becoming suspicious of this young woman's origins. Remember when we hear, "I see the same eyes in different people?" Is Maz referring to the eyes of the Chosen One? Did she know Anakin? Are Rey's eyes betraying her true origins to Maz. Maz tells Rey that the belonging she seeks is ahead of her, not in her past. That could be read as, there is no family, your future lies with the Force, and Luke Skywalker.
Also, Maz tells Rey that the Lightsaber, by which she means the Kyber crystal inside the Skywalker Lightsaber, once called to Anakin, the previous Chosen One, and now calls to Rey. Does this confirm to Maz that Rey is the next Child Of The Force? Does she realise that Luke and Rey meeting is incredibly important, because Rey is vulnerable to the Darkside in general and Snoke's influence in particular? Is Maz insisting Rey take the Lightsaber because, not only does she have a connection with the crystal, but that Luke will see her with it and understand all that has conspired to lead Rey to him.
When Luke sees Rey at the end of the movie, is he seeing, not just the girl, but the Lightsaber as confirmation that these many disparate elements have clicked together, The Church Of The Force and their search for the Chosen One and Maz (having been the guardian of the Skywalker Lightsaber) and the Lightsaber itself all indicate that the search is over. Lor San Tekka found the next Chosen One, she was protected from the Darkside by living in obscurity, without the attachments that would corrupt a padawan's ability to become a Jedi, and that Maz passed the Lightsaber to Rey when she was convinced of her status as the heir to the Force. The look we all recognise as regret or loss, might actually be resignation. It's time for Luke to re-enter the game and train this young woman to bring balance to the force and destroy Snoke and his minions, including Ben.
Rey doesn't have to be anyone's child. She is the mythic archetype we saw in Anakin. One only wonders if her fate will be the same as his....
