Does Chirrut Imwe reveal the link between kyber, the energy field created by all living things and midichlorians?
There is certainly an ongoing debate with what Chirrut meant with his line “The strongest stars have hearts of kyber”. Did he know about the construction of the Death Star and was he merely trying to draw Jyn to him? Did he sense the loss of hope within Jyn at that time, but also the potential she had due to the strength in her heart symbolised by the necklace she was wearing? I took the line quite literally to mean that the brightest stars in the sky are such because of their kyber content.
When stars explode in a supernova, the resulting matter is strewn across space. Planets are born out of the gravitational effect on this matter and in turn organisms are born out of planets. If our theories on supernovas are correct, then Jyn is quite literally stardust, as are we all.
If some of these stars that supernova contain kyber, then it’s safe to say that kyber is likely to be found in many places throughout the Star Wars galaxy. Could it be that kyber is also present within the cells of organisms, similar to the way that carbon is our building block of life? Can I take this a step further and ask if the individual kyber elements could be perceived as organisms in their own right?
“Wihout the midichlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force. They continually speak to us, telling us the will of the Force. When you learn to quiet your mind, you’ll hear them speaking to you” — Qui-Gon Jinn (The Phantom Menace)
So now we could have a situation where kyber elements are present within human cells, known as midichlorians. These midichlorians communicate with the host and the outside world. This continual dialogue is the energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us; it binds the galaxy together.
If we consider planets such as Jedha that have a high concentration of kyber crystals, we can assume that the kyber is continually calling out. That call is responded to by those attuned to the Force and most likely with a higher midichlorian count. These locations become places of worship and holy sites for that reason. Chirrut bases himself on Jedha and helps to protect the kyber, putting his life on the line.
The Jedi and the Sith have been known to have very strong bonds with their lightsabers. We have even seen a lightsaber communicate with a Force sensitive human when Luke’s long lost weapon shows Rey visions of the Past and potentially the Future. Is the kyber within the lightsaber communicating with the kyber within Rey?
Chirrut, aswell as not following the Jedi code, does not wield a lightsaber. For me this is questionable as he could increase his effectiveness in terms of the defense of Kyber on Jedha. However, perhaps this is the will of the Force as communicated through Kyber. If he were to become a Jedi, this may allow Vader to find him and prevent him being the vital link on Scarif for transmitting the plans. We are yet to see if Luke Skywalker will yield a lightsaber going forward, could it be that the Force no longer wills him to do so?
Although I really like this idea, it could be a big ask to consider it within the remaining planned saga movies. From what we’ve seen from ‘The Last Jedi’ footage so far, Luke appears to be disenfranchised with the Jedi and hopefully the movie will address why this is and why he decided to exile himself. Will the movie also address a link between kyber, midicholrians and the Force? I’m not so sure…
At the very least I will hope that ‘The Last Jedi’ and Episode IX leave the door ajar and my theory can remain as ‘head canon’. There is certainly a lot of scope to cover the subject in comics or animated series in the future.
Thanks for reading and remember, you are one with the Force and the Force is with you.
