Hey Star Wars fans, I am travelling this week, but I’m still hoping to be able to cover the breaking Star Wars news whilst away. I thought it might be a good idea to republish some of the editorial that originally ran over on MGFN.co.uk. There are some theories in there, a number of Star Wars Insights and an experiment with the original version of Star Wars A New Hope. This is one of those republished posts. Enjoy
Thank you for reading,
What Is Rey’s Last Name In The Force Awakens?
A lot has been made of the fact that neither Rey nor Finn have second names in The Force Awakens. This has lead to a large number of people claiming that Rey is a Skywalker or a Solo and the fact that we haven’t yet been told her name is to protect that fact. Equally, there are those claiming that Finn is in fact Lando Calrissian’s son, or possibly Mace Windu’s offspring, even that he is a Solo because we recently learned that Han Solo was once married to a lady with dark skin. Well I have another theory that I think might surprise you…
The Skywalker Saga
Lets start here: Enumerated Star Wars films are The Skywalker Saga. The much maligned prequel trilogy is the story of Anakin Skywalker’s rise and fall, the original trilogy is Anakin Skywalker’s redemption, his being saved from the abyss of the dark side by his children Luke and Leia. I believe episodes VII - IX will be the third part of the Skywalker Saga, this time telling the story of Anakin Skywalker’s legacy, but not told through his children…
If anything surprised me in The Force Awaken’s second teaser trailer it was the inclusion of Darth Vader’s helmet, which we last saw on the funeral pyre on Endor. You can see just behind the mask is plinth, upon which the mask usually lives. This is a treasured heirloom, coveted by a devoted follower of The Dark Lord of The Sith. Who is that? I think its fair to assume that the Vader fanboy is Kylo Renn.
Kylo Renn Part I
Who is Kylo Renn? Well, we know that he is a part of a group called the Knights of Renn. We also know that he will be portrayed by Adam Driver. The other thing we know is that Kylo Renn has some Force ability and has crafted his own lightsaber. The resulting weapon is pretty dangerous looking, almost as though he built the thing with little or no guidance by someone with experience. This is speculative, but if Kylo Renn is a Darth Vader fanboy, and he has Vader’s helmet, doesn’t it make sense that perhaps it is he who is pursuing the lightsaber Luke lost at Bespin? We know that weapon plays a huge part in the new movie, and it did belong to Anakin before Luke. Wouldn’t that be something a fan would desire? Lets circle back to Kylo in a minute…
Who Is Rey Part I?
Lets get straight to it. Is Rey a Skywalker or a Solo? I don’t believe she is either. Yes her name is being with held by those in charge at Lucasfilm, and I have a solid theory as to why, but I do not believe it is because she is a Skywalker or a Solo. Here is my theory about Rey.
I think Rey unwittingly crosses paths with the lightsaber as it makes its way from Leia to Han. I think Han is on Jakku, or at least he is based there. Early on in the production of The Force Awakens we heard a rumour that Solo and Chewy would be commanding a large, Star Destroyer like space ship. Not the Falcon. Here is what I think is going on. I think Han Solo left the Millennium Falcon on Jakku whilst he joined the crew of a frigate smuggling live stock (this is based on established rumour, I’m not just making this stuff up). I think Leia knows Han, or at least The Falcon is on Jakku and sends Luke’s lightsaber with Poe Dameron with a message, ‘Get this to Luke.“
My guess is since the lightsaber re-emerged, Kylo Renn has been levelling towns in it’s wake, desperate to get hold of the thing. Leia knows that if she can get it to Han, then Han can use it to locate Luke. This is where Lupita Nyong'o’s Maz comes into play. It would appear that she can get information from physical objects which will give her some insight into Luke’s whereabouts. Why is Luke vital? Perhaps he is the only one capable of saving someone. Who? We will get o that…
So Poe Dameron is heading to Jakku, when he crosses paths with the First Order and is taken prisoner. Just as Leia tucked that plans in R2-D2 so many years before, Poe hides the lightsaber inside BB-8 and dispatches the droid to complete his mission. Poe ends up in captivity on the Start Destroyer and BB-8 is on the surface of Jakku, searching for Han Solo. Enter Rey.
Rey saves BB-8 from Jawa like salvage hunters and eventually learned that BB-8 needs to get to the Millennium Falcon and decides to help him get there. Perhaps she has designs on a reward? This is when she will meet our other protagonist…
Who Is Finn?
I don’t see any reason why Finn would need to be related to anyone who came before him in the Star Wars series. My guess is, like Biggs Darklighter before him, Finn enlisted in the New Republic due to a lack of options in this world. Then the First Order rose and caused a schism in the new Republic. Once this dark force took hold of the galaxy again, Leia rebooted the Rebellion, now called the Resistance, and we come into this story with a group of enlisted republic troops being asked to commit acts of violent cruelty. I suspect many would like to escape the First Order and desert their posts, and I think we join Finn as he decides to do just that. In fact I think he recruits Poe Dameron to help him escape.
The image above is, I believe, Poe Dameron being escorted by Finn, still in his Stormtrooper armour, under the guise of transferring him from one cell to another. I believe Finn is planning to steal a TIE fighter and have Poe pilot it to the surface of Jakku and then he will make a run for it. We see an image of the TIE crashed on the surface of Jakku, and shortly after we will see Finn take Poe’s clothes, the clothes he is wearing here, because we see Finn wearing that jacket on Jakku.
Remember that Poe Dameron is on a mission, sent by Princess Leia to get that lightsaber to Han Solo. So Poe would aim the TIE at a particular spot on Jakku. This is why Finn and Rey meet. BB-8 will then lead them to wherever the Millennium Falcon is docked awaiting the return of Han and Chewy. As we can see in the teaser trailers, Finn and Rey draw a lot at First Order attention and so decide to steal the Falcon to escape.
Who Is Rey Part II
So Rey is now in league with Finn with their shared goal being to escape Jakku and The First Order. Its here that Rey will steal the Falcon and pilot it over the surface of Jakku. We see this in the trailers. The Falcon doing barrel rolls and flying into the engines of that downed Star Destroyer. That is the films one IMAX scene and its Rey in the pilots seat. See my previous article on the matter.
This will inevitably lead to the return of Han and Chewy, with the dynamic smuggling duo boarding the Falcon and confronting Rey and Finn with the "We’re home” moment that reduces forty something year old men to tears.
So Rey and Finn are now in the company of Han and Chewy, not because either of them are a Skywalker or a Solo, but because of a resilient little droid and his master’s mission. Sound familiar? This stuff echoes baby! So BB-8 opens up and out pops Luke’s lightsaber along with a hologram message from Leia. This is speculation on my part and based on nothing at all. Im betting Leia says, “Get this to Luke. He is the only one powerful enough to stop…” Who? We will get to that…
Where Is Luke?
Luke is almost certainly in hiding. We hear he won’t emerge until the closing moments of this film. My guess is that the lightsaber thing is a plan to get to Luke a plan put in place by the leader of the First Order. What follows, if at all accurate is potentially spoilery.
I believe Luke is hiding because his attempts to establish the Jedi order have failed. That the one person with the most promise fell to the dark side and slaughtered all the padawans. Who is that? We are getting there.
I also think that Luke had a son and that son is the Star Wars equivalent of a muggle. The son of a Jedi with little or no Force ability, and I think that failure motivated him to become…
I’m betting General Hux, the apparent leader of The First Order is the son of Luke Skywalker. Hux Skywalker, rose through the ranks of the New Republic with the help of his aunt and brought about it’s fall and manipulated those around him until he fulfilled his ambition and established the First Order, patterned after the Empire. So he is our Skywalker in Star Wars the Force Awakens. Think of him as a cross between Emperor Palpatine and Grand Moff Tarkin. His right hand woman is Captain Phasma and together the have been consolidating power and positioning themselves to get a stranglehold on the galaxy. We see the might of the First Order in that recently leaked Korean TV spot. General Hux didn’t get here alone though. He had help from someone he could trust. Someone he could motivate to bring about the fall of the Republic and the new Jedi order. And that person, the one we have been leading up to all along is…
My belief is that Kylo Renn is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia. My guess is he is an extraordinarily powerful Jedi, and totally consumed by the legacy of his grandfather Darth Vader. This suggests that Hux Skywalker, jealous of Kylo Renn’s ability and with nothing but contempt for his father’s attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order, manipulates his cousin, Kylo Renn, into slaughtering Luke’s padawan learners. From there Hux promises Kylo Renn a chance to fulfil their Grandfather’s goal of restoring peace in the galaxy by ruling it with an iron hand.
Remember, Anakin wasn’t driven by desires to rule the galaxy, he was willing to use the Sith to gain enough power to keep those he valued safe. Namely Padme. He feared losing another loved one. He was willing to align himself with Darth Sidious in order to secure the power he needed and, in the original trilogy, Luke’s emergence reinvigorates those desires. Anakin was misguided, but never really the big bad. Perhaps his grandson Kylo Renn shares those faults?
We learned recently that Kylo Renn is not the characters name. Perhaps its actually Jacen Solo and he is part of the Knights Of Renn, a Sith like organisation, ruled by Supreme Leader Snoke. Kylo Renn most likely wants to achieve his grandfather’s goal and bring peace to the galaxy, and he is willing to align himself with the Knights Of Renn to achieve this goal. Hux uses Renn to gain power for himself and between them the cousins will rule the galaxy.
There Must Be A Skywalker
Why haven’t we had second names for Finn and Rey? My guess is because J.J. and Co are distracting us from what is really going on. There has to be a Skywalker in the enumerated Star Wars movies, but no one said it had to be the good guy. Here we will get Skywalker’s in the form of Anakin’s Grandsons, who will seek to finish his work. They will have designs on removing the one thing that can stop them, Anakin’s son, Luke. They will seek out Anakin’s old lightsaber and get it to Leia who will send it to Luke, via Poe and Han, with a plea for help in saving her son from the dark side. This ploy will only serve to help Hux locate and attempt to kill his father, Luke. My guess is that Solo will attempt to save his own son, Kylo Renn, when he unwittingly leads him directly to Luke’s refuge. Here, I predict, is where Kylo Renn will make the same mistake as his grandfather and unleash his untrained ability on Solo and will accidentally kill him. When he realises what he has done, he flees. Leaving Luke, Finn, Rey and Chewbacca to return Solo’s body to Leia.
If this theory turns out to be true then J.J. Abrams mystery box will be complete. He would have with held two character names, not to hide their identity, but the identity of the two antagonists of the new trilogy.
What do you think? Is there a chance the Skywalkers at the centre of this story are the villains? Will Han Solo die at the hand of his son? Will Anakin’s lightsaber be a part of a trap in The Force Awakens? Leave your thoughts in the comments…
Thanks for reading,
I have a theory. Its called Star Wars Code Red and you can read it by clicking the image of R2-D2 and C-3PO below:
