Hey Star Wars fans, I am travelling this week, but I’m still hoping to be able to cover the breaking Star Wars news whilst away. I thought it might be a good idea to republish some of the editorial that originally ran over on MGFN.co.uk. There are some theories in there, a number of Star Wars Insights and an experiment with the original version of Star Wars A New Hope. This is one of those republished posts. Enjoy
Thank you for reading,
Who will Felicity Jones be playing in Rogue One? I have a theory, which is, admittedly, pretty out there, but lets take a look shall we…
We know that Rogue One will follow a group of Rebels who embark on a mission to steal the plans to the original Death Star. We know little about the characters we will be following, and so I ask you, could Felicity Jones, our lead character, be playing a significant Star Wars character? One we remember from the original trilogy?
Lets acknowledge something before we get started: There is a really good chance that Felicity Jones will play a completely original character, one who’s legend will start with Rogue One. To be honest, I think I might prefer that. I have been very vocal about my objection to Han Solo and Boba Fett movies, because they make the Star Wars galaxy seem small. So having an established character like Mon Mothma take centre stage here may also have a shrinking effect on the galaxy, but, you know what, I really like the idea. Lets see if we can break it…
Before Star Wars
We know the new movie will be set before Star Wars A New Hope. We know that from the official press release, but we have no idea how long before the iconic 1977 movie. Every official word on Rogue One can be found here. Anything beyond that is conjecture. Before Star Wars could mean anything from 19 minutes to 19 years. We all believe that the closing moments of Rogue One will dove tail neatly with the opening moments of Star Wars A New Hope, but what if thats not the case?
19 Years BBY
As I was researching this item I came into contact with the term BBY. Being more of a movie fan I’m not terribly familiar with the term. It means Before The Battle Of Yavin, you know, where the Death Star went bye bye. That means Rogue One is BBY, but by how much? Well there are 19 years BBY where the Death Star was in existence. In fact the oft mentioned plans our team will be seeking have been kicking around since 22BBY, when Count Dooku collected them on Geonosis. Remember when he clicked on a little hand held holo projector and a tiny Death Star appeared? Well that was the first appearance (in canon) of the Death Star. Lets accept that the clock starts ticking from the moment the expensive space station is in orbit of a planet, a'la the Rogue One teaser trailer. So the heist could happen at any point from 19BBY. Shall we do a little math?
“It’s set after Episode III, before IV — and a little more towards IV.”
Never Ask A Lady Her Age
Original Mon Mothma, actress Caroline Blakiston, from Return Of The Jedi was 50 years old when Return Of The Jedi was released. Return Of The Jedi is 4ABY (ABY mean After The Battle Of Yavin) which would make the character of Mon Mothma around 46 at the time of Star Wars A New Hope. The expanded universe story line timetable places Mon Mothma at 48 years old during the events of A New Hope. It should be noted though that the expanded universe is now the “disbanded universe”, so all (or at least most) bets are off. Now lets work backwards from there, the Death Star was 19 years old when it blew, because we saw Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader observing its construction in the closing moments of Revenge Of The Sith. So lets remove that value from Mon Mothma’s age and assume that she started working on obtaining the plans from the very start. That would make our in universe Mon Mothma about 29 0r 30 years old, when the Death Star was floating in front of Vader and Co in Revenge Of The Sith.
So, Felcilty Jones, if she were in fact to be portraying a young Mon Mothma, would need to be able to play her as 30. Miss Jones was born in 1983, making her 32 today. A perfect fit, you might say. In fact its better than perfect because it gives us a couple of years of grace, so the Death Star could be further along in its construction and it could have raised a few eyebrows, giving Mon Mothma enough time to put together her Dirty Dozen style raiding party.
Han Was How Old?
Its worth noting that actors rarely actually play their age. Harrison Ford was 35 during the Star Wars A New Hope shoot. George Lucas places Han Solo at 29 in that movie. So we, should feel comfortable sliding the numbers up and down a little bit. This gives us a little freedom to move the heist for the plans closer to Star Wars without it being implausible that Miss Jones is actually old enough to be Mon Mothma.
I originally started to think Mon mother may be in Rogue One when I was racking my brain about who Felicity Jones could be playing. I went through the whole, Ahsoka Tano or Sabine Wren, thing early on. I even recorded a podcast about it, and then we got word this week that Lucasfilm had trademarked some new character names. One of those names is Mon Destra. Now that could be a completely unrelated name. It could be an official designation, a title. Mon might be a family name and Destra might be Mothma’s sister, but I suspect Mon Destra is Mon Mothma’s maiden name and she marries someone named Mothma. Maybe he will be among the Rogues in this movie.
On the subject of names, is it possible that Rogue Squadron gets its name form this band of Rebels? Perhaps Rogue One is the mission designation for Mon Mothma’s ship. like Home One in Jedi. Perhaps Mon Mothma establishes Rogue Squadron after the events of this movie. Just an idea…
Mon Mothma And The Rogues
So what do you think? Could this movie be based just after Revenge Of The Sith? Could our lead character be Mon Mothma, and is that why she is so involved with the assault on Death Star 2 in Return Of The Jedi, because she knows these space stations? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
Note: We all seem to believe that this film will hand off neatly to A New Hope. That this movie is the first victory hinted at in the opening crawl of the first Star Wars film, but what if that is meant to be our reaction? Wouldn’t it be interesting if we were closer to Sith than Jedi? We might get to see younger versions of established characters like Admiral Akbar or General Madine. We might even get return visits from Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa, maybe not in this film, but in sequels, and trust me, if this film is successful, Lucasfilm we want to produce sequels.
