In part one we looked at where a Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan might feature and in part two I'm going to suggest the obvious for a filmic vehicle for the character and indeed the actor and then look at which characters might interact with him and then pitch my suggestion for what will happen...
A Star Wars Story
With the recent news that Han Solo A Star Wars Story is coming to theaters in May 2018, and no word on the oft rumored Boba Fett film, I think there is a 2020 (which is only four years away kids) window for an Obi-Wan Kenobi A Star Wars Story and or trilogy of films. I think this would be the most exciting use of the character and of Ewan. Show us Obi-Wan's life on Tatooine, through him up against colorful characters in a western style Star Wars movie, and give us the story that set up Old Ben in Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. Why is Owen so suspicious of Ben? What does Luke know about the character? More importantly, how did Ben interact wit hLuke when he was a ten year old boy? That would allow Ewan's Obi-Wan to appropriately age to catch up with the actor himself. I love this idea, and I doesn't discount the Anakin connection I mentioned in Part 1.
An Obi-Wan movie, or indeed trilogy of movies could see the return of Darth Maul (depending on events of Star Wars Rebels), it could see the return of Ahsoka Tano (again depending on the Star Wars Rebels arc) and we could also see Yoda and Liam Neeson's Qui Gon as Obi-Wan uses the Force to commune with his former masters. This is a great idea so please Kathleen Kennedy, make this happen.
I do not however expect this top be the first time we see an Obi-Wan Kenobi appearance with Ewan McGregor under the hood...
Let's take a look at who might interact with a Ewan shaped Obi-Wan and weigh up the options.
I guess he would be the most obvious having ale ready connected with Obi-Wan post death. There would be some explaining to I do regarding the change in appearance though. We expect Luke to speak with Old Ben when communing and I believe that will happen with a CGI Ben Kenobi when required. But this journey is more about the new generation so I expect Rey might offer more of an option when it comes to Ewan's Obi-Wan.
We will undoubtedly see Rey undergo significant training in Episode VIII, in line with Luke's training in Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Wouldn't it be interesting if Rey developed the skill we already saw her demonstrate in The Force Awakens and be able to openly communicate with Obi-Wan. This would be the best use of Ewan as Obi-Wan and allow for things to get weird if booth she and Luke were talking to Obi-Wan at the same time but the ghost we see shifts form with their perspective. Think about it; If Rey and Luke are in conference with the Force Ghosts of Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi, how cool would it be if he kept changing between young(ish) Ewan and CGI Alec? It would be a production convenience of course, but there'd be a compelling reason to explore why Luke will only see the older version and Rey can go back further. I'd be really interested in that.
There could also be some use of the Anakin scenario I covered in part 1, with Obi-Wan telling Luke and Rey about his attempts to reach Anakin as Anakin tried to repair himself. It'd be fascinating.
Another option is Leia. Now this is really left field, but she didn't really spend any time with Old Ben so she might be familiar with Ewan's holocron recording from Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith. What if the Ghost appearance depended on your experience of this characters to manifest? Rey would have no reference for Obi-Wan, so maybe that's why she heard both young and old Obi-Wan during her vision? Hers will be strictly and aural connection. Leia on the other hand might start training herself in the use of the Force to reach her son, Ben, who we last saw as a battered and bruised Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens. Maybe as she reaches out she connects with Obi-Wan and Yoda. There images will reflect the way she saw them in the temple records during Order 66. We know there is a recording of Obi-Wan because out feast inured in Star Wars Rebels first episode.
Now, I have been toying with the idea that Luke might be something of a grey side user. Equal parts dark side and light side. There is a video up on the Talk Star Wars YouTube channel right now outlining that theory. What if Leia is the one who receives messages from Obi-Wan about Rey, her true nature, the danger she is in, Snoke wants her remember, history is set to repeat itself, and maybe Luke won't see it? There are a million options here but I really like this one. Which is surprising because when I started writing part 1, I'd have said Rey seeing a Ewan shaped Obi-Wan was the way to go.
The Force works in mysterious ways...
What do you think? Could Ewan McGregor return to Star Wars as a younger looking Obi-Wan Kenobi to Leia in Episode VIII? I'll he be Rey's Guide? Do you doubt he will even return at all? Leave your thoughts in the comments or email theories to TalkStarWarsINFO@gmail.com
