There is a lot of talk about Ewan McGregor returning to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, following his brief audio cameo in The Force Awakens. As a big fan of both Ewan and the character, I support this, but where might he best be used? Let's take a look in today's Star Wars Insights...
I think the easiest way to proceed will be to look at which movies he might be best suited to, and then which characters might be interacting with him. This might get deep and long.
It doesn't matter where the chatter started, or how much evidence there is to support the claims; we are just going to let our mind wander. The first rumor suggested Rian Johnson's Episode VIII might be the vehicle to host the return of Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi. So let's see how that could play out.
We know that Luke could tap into the living Force and see, and indeed interact with Obi-Wan and Yoda, and even his father's younger spirit. So there is a chance that perhaps Ewan will play Obi-Wan opposite Mark Hamill's Luke. But would that raise the question, why isn't Obi-Wan Alec Guinness anymore? Unless they pop loads of "Alec" make-up one Ewan and try to pull that off. Which I doubt. I think there is a clue in The Force Awakens as to how that might be handled. We hear, during Rey's vision, both Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness' Obi-Wan speak to Rey, "Rey (Guinness), These are your first steps...(McGregor)." That could mean, that even though we haven yet witnessed it, Force ghosts are fluid and shift in appearance. That might explain why Luke saw a young Anakin in 'Jedi. Maybe Rey is a lot more powerful than Luke and so can see further back into Obi-Wan's past.
With VIII, I think the best way to retreat Obi-Wan would be to have one version for Rey and another for Luke, if Luke can even see them before. Perhaps Obi-Wan and Yoda, now they are no longer required have left Luke? There is also the question of Qui-Gon. Why hasn't Luke ever seen him? He became one with the Force and reached out to train Yoda, so you'd expect Luke to be able to talk to him also? We have much to learn I think. Let's come back to VIII later when we look at the characters who may or may not interact with Obi-Wan...
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
The next movie up for release is this years Rogue One: A Star Wars Stor. Now it's all but in the can, so it's unlikely that Ewan could appear here, but there is a way it could happen.
We have been hearing for some time now that Darth Vader will appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Stor, and in quite a significant role. We have also heard that Hayden Christensen has been rumor urged to be donning the black helmet again in the film. This could give us a great opportunity to peek under the mask and she just what is going through Anakin's mind during the rise of Darth Vader.
By the time of Rogue One: A Star Wars Stor Anakin would have been Vader for the better part of two decades, but I like the idea that he'd be trying to repair the damage done to him by manipulating the Force. After all there must be volumes of Sith text available to him now with all sorts of black magic relating to life extension and the manipulation of the mediclorians. Perhaps Anakin learns to connect to the living Force during these experiments. Clearly he manages it because he is a Force Ghost by the closing moments of Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi. Wouldn't it be cool is Obi-Wan appears to Anakin during these moments?
Remember when Vader tells Luke that Obi-Wan once believed Anakin could come back from the Darkness? We haven't really seen that play outer have we. Sure it's implied at the end of Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith that Obi-Wan would rather save Anakin than kill him, but I'm looking for a good soul searching attempt by Obi-Wan to reach Anakin at the bottom of the Dark Side abyss.
I think it was Shadows Of The Empire where we learn that Vader is using the Force to heal his wounds. He is using the Dark Side which is fueled by his rage, once he starts to see results he experiences joy, which undoes the healing and he seems trapped in the cycle of loss, which is really a Dante like purgatory for Anakin and a really nice touch to the c Harlee actor now languishing in Legends obscurity. I'd like to see that element return with Obi-Wan appearing to Anakin, trying to reach his old friend during these moments of joy.
I don't expect that to be the use case for Obi-Wan though.
In part two we will look at one other movie that could play host to Ewan McGregor and then look at the characters who might interact with him. Part two will be up this time tomorrow.
