Hey Star Wars fans, I am travelling this week, but I’m still hoping to be able to cover the breaking Star Wars news whilst away. I thought it might be a good idea to republish some of the editorial that originally ran over on MGFN.co.uk. There are some theories in there, a number of Star Wars Insights and an experiment with the original version of Star Wars A New Hope. This is one of those republished posts. Enjoy
Thank you for reading,
Is Lukes Lightsaber Cursed?
We know now that Luke’s lightsaber, the same lightsaber that once belonged to his father Anakin Skywalker, will be at the centre of The Force Awakens. It had featured in each of the teaser trailers so far and made a brief appearance in John Boyega’s hands in the Instagram clip released last week. Let’s look at the evidence and what that might indicate for John Boyega’s Finn in the new movie…
.Firstly, let me say that I’m not suggesting that the laser sword is actually cursed. I don’t mean that the hilt had the whammy put on it by a Sith Witch, I mean that narratively the weapon, just as it is the Excalibur of the Star Wars universe, is a bad omen for the character that has it in his procession.
Anakin first gets his own lightsaber in Attack Of The Clones, and terrible things happen to him in that movie. Firstly, his mother dies after a prolonged spell as a prisoner of the Tusken Raiders on Tatooine. He then goes on to tempt the dark side by slaughtering wall those Tuskens with that very weapon. Later, Anakin loses his arm in a duel with Count Dooku. Now, he doesn’t have that lightsaber at that point, he is using one passed to him by another Jedi, but he may have already been cursed by it at this point.
In Revenge Of The Sith, Anakin again tempts the dark side when he uses the weapon to slaughter his old adversary, Count Dooku. Shortly after he uses the blade to take down all the Jedi young kings in the temple, and goes on to face Obi-Wan. This is where the Sith hits the fan and Obi-Wan removes Anakin’s last arm and both legs, before the fallen Jedi bursts into flames and ends up bolted inside that black armour.
A New Hope, An Old Curse
In the original 1977 movie that started it all, Luke, our central character, has a pretty frustrating life, but not until he comes into procession of his father’s lightsaber do things start to go very very wrong.
Almost immediately after Obi-Wan passes him the weapon, the handing down of Excalibur if you will, Luke’s Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen are killed and left smouldering outside the Homestead. Soon after that, Like loses his mentor, Obi-Wan, and one of his oldest friends, Biggs Darklighter in the assault on the Death Star. Pretty bad luck if you ask me.
The first time we see Luke use the weapon in Empire is to escape the Wampa. Immediately after he collapses in the snowy was town of Hoth. He is soon rescued by his friend Han Solo, who uses the lightsaber to slice open the Taun Taun he rode on and slide Luke’s body inside. By the end of the movie Han will be encased in carbonite and sold to Jabba The Hutt.
On Dagobah, Yoda warms Luke to leave the weapon behind when entering the cave. Luke fails to heed the advice of his master and enters with the weapon by his side. He soon draws the weapon and ignites the blade only to be confronted by Darth Vader. This dark vision torments Luke as he removes Vader’s head only to be confronted by his own visage.
By the end of Empire, Luke, still, using his father’s blade, fights Vader and loses his hand. At this point the lightsaber is presumed lost…
We are told that the lightsaber that was lost on Bespin forms a larger part of the Force Awakens story. In the very first teaser frailer from November 2015, there is a lightsaber igniting sound after the final logo appears onscreen. Shortly after the release of the teaser we learned that this would be Anakin/Luke’s lightsaber and it will feature heavily in the new movie.
In teaser two, which debuted at Celebration earlier this year, we get to see the weapon being passed to what we are assuming is Leia Organa’s hands. So after we heard this tantalising rumour:
There is a scene where Lupita Nyong'o’s Maz Kanatta performs some sort of spiritual act with those gathered around the lightsaber, and the story of the weapon is told. The weapon passes from person to person on it way back to Luke via Leia, in its wake is pain and suffering. We understand that Daisy Ridley’s Rey is disturbed by the weapon and will not have anything to do with it. We also saw some concept art of Finn in Poe Dameron’s clothing (we believe Poe is transporting the weapon back to Luke from Leia) and in the image Finn has the lightsaber in his jackets pocket. Then the big reveal…
At D23 we got an exclusive poster. One of the reveals from the poster is the fact that Finn will use the lightsaber. And then last week we got further proof that Finn will use the weapon when we got a teaser trailer on Instagram. What does this mean for Finn in The Force Awakens? My guess is that Finn will walk Luke’s path in The Force Awakens, and that he will take up arms against Kylo Renn. Expect by the end of this movie that Finn will lose that hand in a duel with Kylo Renn. What does Kylo Renn want?
We have spoken before about what part Kylo Renn will play in The Force Awakens. You can read some of those bits here and here and watch something I recorded for YouTube here. In short I believe Kylo Renn is Han and Leia’s son, Anakin’s grandson, and that he is obsessed with his grandfathers legacy. I believe he may be using the weapon to track down Luke, and when he finds him, exact revenge, only to take the lightsaber as his own. To Kylo Renn this is the first weapon wielded by Darth Vader, the weapon he used to slay the Jedi younglings and the weapon that was taken by Obi-Wan from beside Anakin’s ruined body on Mustafar.
What do you think of the theory that Anakin’s lightsaber is a curse to all who handle it? Will this spell doom for Finn in The Force Awakens? Why do you think this weapon is so important to The Force Awakens?
