This issue of Star Wars Insights contains some spoilers for The Force Awakens, so if you're one of the three people who still haven't seen the film, you might want to come back later...
The Force Awakens opens with Poe Dameron, one of our new heroes and self proclaimed best pilot in the galaxy, meeting with a mysterious older gentlemen in a modest settlement on Jakku. We know little about this man, but we know he is pocession of something vital. The key to a map that will lead to Luke Skywalker.
We also learn that Lor San Tekka knows General Leia Organa, implying that he was associated with the Rebellion at some point before Leia dropped the title of Princess. When Poe mentions General Leia, Lor San Tekka says, "To me she always be royalty." So why would this elderly gentleman, who has connections to the Rebellion and is loyal to Princess Leia, be in pocession of such a vital piece of information on a backwater planet?
Because he is on a mission.
Here's my Lor San Tekka speculation; I think Lor San Tekka is on Jakku because he has been asked to stay and watch over Rey as she matures in relative obscurity. More than that I'd suggest that it was Luke who made this request and here's why.
Snoke, who may or may not be Darth Plagueis plotting his return, has seduced Ben Solo to the Dark Side with glorious tales of Anakin Skywalker and his accession to Darth Vader, Dark Lord Of The Sith. One thing Ben had to do was destroy Luke Skywalker's school for the next generation of Jedi, and he did this from within. The Knights Of Ren, as seen in Rey's Force vision, slaughtered all the young Jedi, leaving Luke Skywalker as the last remaining remnant of the ancient order. We see Luke, mourning the loss with R2-D2 in the rain during Rey's vision.
Is Rey Luke's daughter, and sole heir to the Jedi?
We also see Rey being left on Jakku in the care of Unkar Plutt, the junk dealer who takes pocession of the Millennium Falcon. Could he be a part of young Rey's protective guard? What if Luke manages to save his daughter? Or perhaps Ben Solo spared Rey because she was, after all, his young cousin, and/or he had designs on using her as a Sith apprentice at some point in the future. Either way Luke manages to whisk Rey away from the Jedi temple and into hiding on Jakku. Perhaps it was Luke who stole the Millennium Falcon and gave it to Unkar Plutt, along with a Jedi Mind Trick, in exchange for his guardianship of Rey. No one would suspect an indentured child is the heir to the Jedi order, she would go unnoticed. To be sure she remains safe, Luke asks Lor San Tekka to watch over Rey the way Obi-Wan watched over him as a child, and to keep safe a map that will one day lead Rey to her father to begin her destiny.
This would explain why Lor San Tekka has the map, and why he happens to be on Jakku, and why the Falcon is also on Jakku. It will explain the comments during Kylo Ren and Lor San Tekka's exchange that indicate the two have a connection.
If this is accurate it would represent another echo from Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope, and make Lor San Tekka an incredibly important character in the series.
I wonder if we will get an expalanation about Lor San Tekka, his connection to the Skywalker family and why exactly he was on Jakku. If we do I wonder where that story will be told. Do you have an alternate theory? Got any ideas where this backstory will be told? Do you doubt Rey is a Skywalker? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
