When we heard this week that Mon Mothma would have a larger role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story than she had in Return Of The Jedi, my mind started racing. Will Mon Mothma open the door for the return of some other familiar faces in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? Read on for some wild speculation....
One could be forgiven for thinking that Mon Mothma's only responsibility in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is to gather together team of expendables to go on a mission to secure the plans to the Death Star. Other than that you might expect to see her co-ordinating and looking pensive in the war room on Yavin IV, but what if she has more to do than that?
As we understand it Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will lead us up to moments before the start of A New Hope. During this period of time there was an Imperial Senate providing what was left of democracy in the Star Wars galaxy. We know from A New Hope that the Emperor dissolves the council permanently during the events of that film, effectively consolidating his power. We also know that Mon Mothma was a member of the Imperial Senate at this time, whilst she and others, including Bail Organa, worked tirelessly to build a Rebel Alliance.
Now, I know this won't be popular with many Star Wars fans, but we might just get a peek at some of the prequel locations in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. I'm specifically thinking we might get to return to the Imperial Senate. If Mon Mothma's role is an expanded one, then wouldn't it make sense to see her in her environment? As a politician, working to resolve the problems from within? With that in mind, might an expanded role for Mon Mothma open the door for characters such as Bail Organa (an appropriately aged Jimmy Smits) and maybe even Palpatine himself.
I really like the idea of Mon Mothma getting up close and personal with the Devil himself (Palpatine) and questioning him about the secret super weapon, and thereby perhaps giving the Emperor the first hints that all is not well in his Senate. Perhaps she might even be the reason Palpatine drops the pretence and wipes away the remnants of the old republic. Wouldn't that be ironic?
I understand that many people want to stay away from the Star Wars politics after the prequels, but if done right this could set up many of the dominos we see fall in the subsequent movies. I would love to see Bail, whether in politico mode or not, working with Mon Mothma to build this alliance, sending his daughter, a respected member of the Senate, to assist in the safe transport of the plans. Wouldn't it be impactful if his final words were something like, "I will go to Alderaan and co-ordinate things from there."
It would be nice to see the Imperial Dignitaries we see in Return Of The Jedi, at the Emperor's side in the Senate, in place of Mass Amedda from the prequels, and, of course it would be a treat to see Ian McDiarmid return to his iconic role of Emperor.
