Who remembers Snoke's dialogue from the very first teaser for The Force Awakens? Everyone? Good. He says, Kylo Ren, "There has been an awakening, have you felt it? The Dark Side and the Light..." I have a theory about what the awakening was and what exactly Snoke meant by this question, in today's Star Wars Insights...
So we have recently learnt, in novelization of The Force Awakens, that Snoke admires Kylo Ren because he uses both sides of the Force. If Snoke is a Dark Side user, he may not understand how to go about using the Light Side of The Force. If it's true and he admires this quality in Kylo Ren, then perhaps he would be interested in another Force sensitive who can do the same thing. 7
Anakin Skywalker could certainly use booth the Dark and Light Sides of the Force and I believe we meet a new character in The Force Awakens who can do the same.
When we meet Rey she is certainly using the Force to get by in her day to day life as a scavenger. Those risks we see her taking in the Star Destroyer would certainly be deadly to a normal person, suggesting that she may very well be using the Force without knowing it. It's only when she is put under tremendous stress that she pushes herself further.
A lot has been made, this week, of exactly what the awakening is in The Force Awakens. Snoke feels it, as does Kylo Ren. So I'm pretty sure Luke picked up on it. But what exactly was it? I'm convinced that the moment the awakening occurs is when Rey and Finn steal the Millennium Falcon. I'm sure that Rey has to dig deep into the Force, albeit unwittingly, to be able to fly that ship the way she does, and what's motivating her during the escape?
Dave Filoni, show runner of Star Wars Rebels and Padawan to George Lucas has suggested that even Han Solo, although not a Jedi, uses the Force when he flies the Falcon. Chances are many people in the Star Wars universe do, as the Force surrounds and penetrates all living things, right? But as we have learned in Alan Dean Foster's novel, the ability to use both the Dark Side and the Light is rare and, apparently, quite important to Snoke.
Could it be, that had Rey been flying the Falcon on a normal day, her use of the Force would have gone unnoticed? But because she was frightened by her pursuers she inadvertently used the Dark SIde, a use that was fueled by her fear, and that was what Snoke felt; another Force sensitive who could use both sides of the Force.
If so, Snoke would have, at best, another potentially corruptible student to seduce, but at the very least he could replace Kylo Ren with a more powerful apprentice. We see during her duel with Kylo Ren that Rey is struggling to control her fear and her anger, and barely manages to resist killing him as he lay on the ground before her. It's only when the ground between them both opens up, that she lowers her weapon and flees.
Could Rey be a Dark Side user? Might it be possible that she could fall to the Darkness as Kylo Ren redeems himself and returns to the Light? One thing's for sure, it's going to be fascinating to watch...
