Hey Star Wars fans, I am travelling this week, but I’m still hoping to be able to cover the breaking Star Wars news whilst away. I thought it might be a good idea to republish some of the editorial that originally ran over on MGFN.co.uk. There are some theories in there, a number of Star Wars Insights and an experiment with the original version of Star Wars A New Hope. This is one of those republished posts. Enjoy
Thank you for reading,
This week’s Star Wars Insights was triggered in part by the recent Empire gatefold cover that shows our new heroes, including BB-8, standing near the Millennium Falcon. I have a theory about Solo’s ship, who flies it into that Star Destroyer and what Han meant by “Chewie, we’re home.” Read on for more…
Rey flies the Falcon. There I said it, I covered it in a previous article here, and I think I know why. Rey and Finn are being pursued by the First Order, lead by Captain Phasma, and take the Falcon in order to escape. That’s what we saw in both teasers thus far, Rey evading TIE fighters and barrel rolling around the Jakku sky before disappearing into the engines of that down imperial ship.
I’ve covered how I think they stubble onto the Falcon before, but what I want to focus on here is that Empire cover, and what it shows us that could be considered evidence to support my argument. Check out the close up below:
Let’s talk about that quote on the cover. We all know that is Luke’s line from Jedi and that it was re-recorded for the second teaser. In Jedi it’s was spoken to Leia’s, in Awakens I suspect it is spoken to one of the two new Skywalkers in the Star Wars universe. I believe them to be Hux and Kylo Ren. Luke’s son and Leia’s son respectively. Read my Skywalker Insight here. I am betting Hux is the Star Wars equivalent of a muggle and that failure drives his path to the First Order and that Kylo’s gift is outmatched by his devotion to his grandfather, Darth Vader. I think this line id spoken to Kylo Ren and that we will witness it in a flashback or force vision. I think Kylo Ren will be one of Luke’s students as he considers rebuilding the Jedi order, but Kylo’s fall to the darkside leads him to slaughter the padawans and drives Luke into hiding. That will make Kylo Ren an Anakin analogue and Luke a Yoda like figure for this new series of films and I find that very exciting…
That’s a tarp blowing around in the Jakku breeze. Nothing get released by accident. We are being shown this deliberately and it could be that this tarp was pulled over the Millennium Falcon by Han and Chewy before they went on a mission. That mission we hear could possibly be the smuggling of livestock. It could be that Han has fallen back into his old life, working for gangsters, or it could be that Han’s smuggling is an important revenue stream for the resistance. That Han and Chewy smuggling keeps the lights on in the Resistance headquarters. We heard early on that Han and Chewy would be commanding a large ship. We assumed that would be a Star Destroyer, but what if it’s a large pirate frigate used to smuggle cargo? That would make sense, and so whilst they are away on this mission, the Falcon sits covered by a tarp in the desert on Jakku. So how does Rey find it?
We are lead to believe that Luke’s Lightsaber drives the story in The Force Awakens. To be more precise, the journey that weapon took since Luke lost it (and his hand) in The Empire Strikes Back. I’m predicting that Leia’s comes into procession of it, and gives it to Poe Dameron to get to Han with a message to take it to Luke. I’m guessing the urgency is related to something relating the Lightsaber, and not just the weapon itself. Could it be that it is highly sort after by Kylo Ren and the new order who may or may not be lead by Skywalkers. See here for more on that. So Poe, knowing that The Millennium Falcon is on Jakku, under a tarp, heads there with the weapons when he is attached by The First Order. He places the weapon inside BB-8 and sends the droid to complete his mission. That’s when Rey finds BB-8 and helps him get where he is going, the Falcon, just in time for her and Finn, who they meet up with for these reasons, to take the Falcon to evade capture.
Now here is where things get interesting. Imagine the Falcon either returning to its hiding place under Rey’s control or crossing paths with a returning Solo and being swallowed by the frigate Solo is in command of, and Han and Chewy entering the captured ship to confront Rey and Finn with the “Chewy, we’re home.” line. Now if Poe is with Finn and Rey at this time it’s reasonable to assume that he will know Han and make the appropriate introductions, or perhaps BB-8 throws up a holo message from Leia’s which will go a long way toward getting Han Solo to jump into action.
Where things go from here is open for speculation, but I’ll not out that here because I believe it’s potentially spoilery to discuss third act theories.
So the Falcon is hidden on Jakku whilst Han is away smuggling to raise money for the Resistance. Rey follows BB-8, who’s on a mission, to the ship and steals it to evade capture just as Solo returns and tractor beams the Falcon into the hold of the frigate he is commanding. That explains the tarp on the Falcon in that cover and the “we’re home” line. I’m happy with that theory, are you? Leave your comments below…
