There was a significant Rogue One: A Star Wars Story presence at Star Wars Celebration on Friday, and so I thought I'd share a few pieces with you.
One of the first things we found was the Rogue One props and costumes exhibition. Below are a few images from that exhibit, including Jyn's costume, Krennic's shuttle, some Stormtroopers and more...
At the main panel for the day we got a lot of juicy reveals from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. First up is the really cool (I got to take one home) poster. See below.
There were a ton of cool insights from the cast including the reveal that Alan Tudyk's droid, K2-SO was once and imperial droid, reprogrammed by the Rebels (which we knew) and he is Diego Luna's best, possibly only friend. K2 is (re)wired a little strangely making him somewhat idiosyncratic. I get the feeling they are the Han and Chewy of the movie.
We heard from most of the cast, Sergeant Jyn Erso herself, Felicity Jones, revealed that she is from a planet called Jedha, and that she is different from Luke and Rey, in as much as she knows exactly where she comes from, but finds a reason for being during the story.
ILM's John Knoll was there and he told us how he originally came up with the idea during Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith production, but only decided to pitch the film when encouraged to do so by friends. John said he hated the idea of leaving the story untold. He also showed very early concept art for the Rogues, see below:
We got to watch a stunning 3 minute sizzle reel for the movie, which I'll embed in the body of this post. There are some incredible moments in there that might have moistened my eyes a little. We also got to see a short trailer, which didn't go out on Star Wars.com, and that did have me rolling a tear.
We got our first look at Jyn's daddy too. Mads Mikkelesen was on top form, trying desperately not to reveal too much. See the image of his character below.
Galen invents something vital in the years leading up to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and it causes issues for his daughter. They live on the planet named Jeddah (see below).
The people of Jedha are dedicated followers of The Force, but their home world is occupied by the Empire. Is this why Jyn comes to the attention of the Rebels, because she is fighting the Imperial Troops alone, trying to free her people. We get a clip of Jyn passing a piece of fruit to a small child. I get a Robin Hood vibe from Jyn.
Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen spoke extensively about their characters. In fact, Jiang said too much and seemed to drop a spoiler. If it's true, then it's huge some I'm not going to includ it here, but you can read my take on it here. Please don't share it though, some fans might want to avoid this news.
Here is the Rogue One sizzle reel.
In addition to the sizzle reel, we got some other cool video. The panel opened with the Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope opening crawl which suddenly started to rotate through its plane and become more flat and then started to become static with interference. The sound design from last years teaser played, the sound of panicked voices during combat gave way to the Rogue One logo. This sent shivers up the spine.
We also got an exclusive traile, "Just for you" said Kathleen Kennedy. It was short but revealed Jyn as a small child, cross disolving into Sergeant Jyn on the beach in the movie. We had shots of shuttles landing and scenes from the beach battle. Krennic walking around the war room on the Death Star, with Scarif (the tropical planet) hanging in space just through the view port. The best moment is one we have predicted on the podcast. The final few seconds of the trailer show what appears to be a red screen displaying an image of some kind, maybe a display of a targeted planet, but as the camera moves it reveals that we are in fact seeing a shiny black floor and in it's reflection, we can clearly identify a familiar figure. Smash cut to black and the all to iconic deep breathing of Darth Vader filled the auditorium.
It was a perfect reveal for this icon of modern cinema.
In short the panel was something I desperately wanted to be a part of and I got really lucky to be in that room. We saw clips of Alan Tudyk's K2-SO in a desert canyon like environment being cranky with Cassian and Jyn, the reveal of Jyn Erso's action figure where we first learned the term Jedha. We got the poster reveal and heard from Academy Award winner Forrest Whittaker. In short it was the perfect hour. I hope you've enjoyed this little peek into it.
Thank you for reading,
