There is a lot to be taken away from the new Rogue One trailer, and I'm convinced some of what we are seeing in the trailer is unfinished. By that I mean, that some of these shots probably still have some post processing and CGI to be added, and I believe one of those shots will be finished to reveal an old favourite Star Wars character....
Here's the shot I'm talking about:
In this shot you can clearly see Jedha on the Death Star view screen, and you can just make out Krennic standing before the view screen. So who is this figure entering the shot? My guess is that this is the body double standing in for Tarkin and that this shot is yet to be finished to include the CGI make over that will render Tarkin in all his Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope glory.
Tarkin will eventually take control of the Death Star, and we know he is already a significant player in the Empire. We know this from the animated shows, and the closing shot of Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith. So he would be conspicuous by his absence here. There are also a couple of shots in the new trailer that suggest the presence of the Tarkin character. Like the shot below which is Krennic making his case for the power of the Death Star to someone standing next to Darth Vader.
People have suggested to me that this is Krennic talking to Vader, but to my mind the eye lines don't add up, plus, Vader is on Tarkin's leash at this time right? So might this be a scene that includes Tarkin standing next to Vader debating the merits of the Death Star with one of its creators? Below is a shot taken from the Star Wars Celebration Europe sizzle reel.
It shows a character (in the middle of the crowd without a hat) that I believe is the body double for Tarkin. The way this actor moves is very reminiscent of Peter Cushing and if you look really closely you can just make out tracking markers across the actor's shoulders, which might suggest that this chap's head and shoulders are to be replaced in post production.
To sum up. I believe Tarkin will be a significant fixture in this movie, and that he a Krennic will be locked in a battle for the Emperor's good graces. I also suspect that this power play will seal Krennic's fate by the end of the movie.
There is an outside chance that the character we see from behind is Thrawn, but that will be lost on most of the general audience, where as Tarkin will be familiar to many.
Who do you think this guy is? And is he isn't Tarkin, who is he? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
