There are a couple of bits that have had me thinking since the new Rogue One trailer hit this week, and one of them is the reveal of the fallen (very telling) Jedi statue on Jedha....
Its an image, that I admit, passed me by on the initial viewing, but this fallen Jedi statue on Jedha is extremely thought provoking.
Here's what I'm thinking. Jedha is a planet in ruins, hence the fallen statue, but why is it in this state? Has this it happened since Order 66? Was this planet pristine when the republic fell? Or could this be our first new canon look at the Old Republic?
If Jedha is an Old Republic planet, where the Jedi had temples and is a depository for Kyber Crystals, then will we get a new wave of stories that tell the story of the fall of Jedha?
There's more though.
If Jedha is this ruined moon, trapped in a permanent winter, that was once this important Jedi stronghold/place of worship, then could it be one of many? Did a similar fate befall other dusty ruined planets and moons in the Star Wars galaxy?
I'm thinking Jakku.
Are we going to learn about the fall of Jedha in Rogue One, and will it hint the reasons Jakku is now a lifeless dusty planet? A planet which is important to the Sith. I need to point out that I haven't yet read the end of Life Debt which seems to talk about Sidious/Palpatine setting up a research facility on Jakku. Could Jakku have been a planet strong in the Force? Did it once play host to some significant event in Star Wars History? On this week's podcast (out on monday) we were asked if Anakin was from Tatooine, or did he and his mother come from another planet? My suggestion is that Anakin was created on Jakku. That Plagueis manipulated the Mediclorians to create a vergence in the Force, a child Shmi Skywalker was to carry to term. I'm betting Shmi was actually from Jakku and got swept up in the slave trade whilst pregnant, which is why the Sith didn't swoop in a pick up Anakin when he was born. Could this have been the will of the Force?
So a few short questions based on the new trailer's reveal of this Jedi statue. Was Shmi on Jakku when Plagueis created Anakin? And was Jakku a planet similar to Jedha, strong in the Force and central to certain Jedi events, and did those two planets share a similar fate? Perhaps in the Old Republic period? Is this why Palpatine set up the research facility on Jakku, because of its significance? And is this why Lor San Tekka and the church of the Force set up the settlement there in The Force Awakens? Could these planets be vergence planets in the Force?
I'd be really interested in what you think about some of these points. Are we going to learn that these things are all connected? Will Jedha and Jakku tie the old and new time periods together? Leave your thoughts in the comments below, or send us voicemails for us to play on the podcast.
