Some outlets have picked up on this and are framing the story in a way that positions Felicity Jones as second choice for the lead in the first Star Wars spin off film. Read the actual quote from Miss. Mara below.
Miss. Mara didn't even read for the part. It is conceivable that this meeting took place about the time Felicity was meeting with producers and Gareth Edwards for the role, and that at some point both actresses would have read for the part. There is no reason to believe Miss. Mara was the production's first choice, and who knows which of the two Oscar Nominated Actresses would have delivered the better performance.
One thing is for sure, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was destined to feature an incredibly talented woman in the lead role. I really like Rooney Mara, and I hope that she gets to play in the Star Wars universe at some point in the future. If you seen her performance in David Fincher's Girl With The Dragon Tattoo you'll know Miss. Mara is capable of constructing a deeply complex and powerful character, and would be a real asset to a future Star Wars movie. Fingers crossed that this happens.
