A synopsis of the upcoming Star Wars book Rogue One Catalyst has been revealed and its thrown new light on some of the rumoured story elements in this year's Star Wars film....
Lets start by taking a look at the synopsis and then we will look at a couple if points in particular:
So the first thing we notice is that Catalyst is set before Palpatine declares himself Emperor and Order 66 changes everything. At this time, Palpatine was building his Death Star, as we know, but what we didn't know was that Orson Krennic was the man overseeing the project. But there are more impactful reveals here.
- Galen Erso, Jyn's father, is an old friend of Krennic's
- Lyra Erso is Jyn's mother
- Krennic saves the Erso family from Separatist kidnappers
- Galen feels indebted to Krennic and Krennic uses this to his advantage
- Galen believes his is developing something for good
If we read between the lines here a little we can see that Jyn herself must have been in Krennic's "care" for sometime there as a child. One wonders how she escaped to spend time on her own. Its also fair to assume that Krennic and Galen are from the same planet. If they're old friends it would seem fitting that they are both from Jedha. At Celebration we saw Jyn's action figure labelled as Jedha, which could be an indication that she hails from that moon. If this is true then it would appear that Krennic is about to destroy hi home-world in Rogue One in order to impress the Emperor. Is that what this look conveys in the trailer?
I'm guessing with the Death Star being so close to Jedha that blowing up the moon is probably out of the question. So perhaps the Krennic simply destroys the planets atmosphere.
I never would have imagined that so much could have been revealed in one short synopsis for a book. Reveals that will certainly impact the way I view Rogue One. We had speculated about many of these elements recently, most notably Lyra Erso being Jyn's mother. Talk Star Wars listener Stacey White suggested this very thing to us on the podcast. We had also been asking about how the movie may start around the time of Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith, as we see footage of a young Jyn in the SWC sizzle reel.
I will certainly be aiming to read this book before the release of Rogue One in December, time permitting. You can order your copy form the link in this post. Rogue One Catalyst is scheduled to be released in hardback on 17th November and it looks like the Kindle version will hit around 6th October.
Thank you for reading,
