Welcome to Robert Cast's Pull List. In this edition I review issue 2 of Star Wars Doctor Aphra...
Written by: Kieron Gillen
Art by: Kev Walker
In issue #1 we learned that Dr Aphra is a rogue archaeologist. We also found out in this galaxy far, far away you must have attained your archaeology accreditation in order to legally sell or trade rare and valuable artifacts. Having recently acquired such an item Dr Aphra looks to cash in, but finds out her doctorate has been temporarily revoked. To add insult to injury, Dr Aphra’s father is the one responsible for the accreditation suspension.
The writer Kieron Gillen makes nice use of Aphra’s father with compelling “back & forth” dialogue to weave some interesting flashback pages into this issue. We get some insight on how our hero was raised and possibly why she is the person she’s become. As a set up for a future story arch in this book there is a ancient artifacts origin story that both Dr Aphra and her father have very different opinions on. The artist Kev Walker does an excellent job in his use of colours and tones to place the reader in mindset in both parties.
I really enjoyed this book. This issues art and text keep the pages turning with little effort. The story is given levity with the gratuitous use of the Doctor’s growling muscle Black Krrsantan the wookiee. Not to mention her protocol droid Triple Zero who has apenchant for torturing humans. I also have little doubt that the appearance on a familiar moon in the final panel will have everyone looking forward to issue #3.
