Will Rey have a new lightsaber in Star Wars The Last Jedi? If we are to take what we see in the Battlefront II gameplay footage as being accurate, that would seem to be the case...
If you didn't know we have a daily Star Wars podcast on Talk Star Wars called the TSW Kessel Run. It's podcasting "on the run" as I record a short episode looking at the newest stories about the new movies, TV shows, comics and video games. On yesterday's episode I chatted about the possibility of Rey getting a new lightsaber hilt in The Last Jedi.
The whole thing started with an image from Battlefront II showing Rey equipped with a lightsaber that definitely isn't the Skywalker Lightsaber. The weapon itself was recently rebranded by the Lucasfilm marketing department as Rey's lightsaber, but could that have more to do with the Kyber Crystal inside than the hilt itself?
We know that the Kyber Crystal called to Rey in The Force Awakens, much like the crystal would have called to its original owner, Anakin Skywalker, and this call set Rey on her path to Luke Skywalker. By the end of the movie Rey will find Jedi master Luke Skywalker on Ahch-To and offer him his old weapon. This is where The Last Jedi will pick up the story.
We had heard talk, many many months ago, that Luke would, at some point in The Last Jedi, take the Skywalker lightsaber from Rey and use the Force to dismantle it. Is this Luke releasing the Kyber Crystal from his fathers hilt, and passing it to Rey, it's new master? Will Luke encourage Rey to build her own weapon, a right of passage for a Jedi Padawan?
Well the Battlefront II footage seems to suggest that might be the case.
In the game we see Rey standing, equipped with a lightsaber hilt that is very different from theSkywalker lightsaber design. Now, this could simply be an option in the game, to equip your character with your choice of weapon from their inventory. But what if is an indication that the story does play out as I speculate above, and Rey has built her own lightsaber in the image of her master's weapon.
If you look at the design of "Rey's" lightsaber in the image above you can see how closely it resembles the Jedi lightsaber Luke had in Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi, which itself is very close to the design of his master's (Obi-Wan Kenobi) from Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith and Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. Do Padawan's emulate the designs of their master's weapons? Was Anakin's based loosely on the design of Yoda's lightsaber? The two are quite similar, with Anakin's scaled up to suit the human hand. Maybe Anakin built his lightsaber at a young age, whilst still training under Yoda?
We got a glimpse at Rey training with the lightsaber in the trailer for The Last Jedi and some of the Annie Leibovitz images in Vanity Fair last month, and they show Rey with the blue blade, which is also present in the Battlefront II footage, so whatever happens to the Skywalker lightsaber hilt, the Kyber Crystal that called to Rey, appears to remain in her possession.
What do you think? Will Rey change lightsaber hilts in The Last Jedi? Will Luke finally destroy the weapon that has caused so much pain throughout the Star Wars saga? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
