So, how many cameos did you see in Rogue One? We know it was full of them. As some wonderful fan service, lots of returning characters were slotted in for us to notice, some good, some not so good. Some were real blink and you’ll miss them ones as well, whereas some were vital to the plot. The thing I loved about all these guys is that they were called up from many different Star Wars mediums. If you had a Venn Diagram of Rebels, The Clone Wars and all the movies Rogue One would be the bit in the middle they all met.
So, with this spoiler laden thought in mind, here are the ones I have noticed.
There are a few really obvious ones I really don’t need to go into deeply, Tarkin, Vader, Mon Motha, Bail Organa, R2 D2 and C3 PO, and finally the one and only Princess Leia. These guys were front and centre. We also obviously had Saw Gerrera. This is a less familiar character if you haven’t seen the Clone Wars cartoon series. And if you haven’t, you should. Here, he is played by Forest Whittaker channelling his inner Eddie Murphy doing a Bill Cosby impression.
Firstly, we got a Probot lurking in the background on Jedha, I imagine trying to find some Rebels like the one we saw on Hoth. We also got mouse droids, always a favourite of mine and as distinctive a sound as any in Star Wars. We also saw what I knew as a Death Star Droid. I had the figure of it anyway.
For those of you unfamiliar with the series Rebels, firstly (in my best Game of Thrones voice) Shame! However, my son Freddie the avid fan was the one to point out a few nods to the TV show. Firstly, there was Chopper, the fun droid from the series, can be seen briefly on Yavin 4. You also hear “General Syndulla, please report,” called as the Rogues are getting ready to leave for Scarrif. There is a pretty good chance this is Hera, pilot of the Ghost. The Ghost is the staring ship from Rebels, and if you are quick you can see it during the battle to destroy the shield generator. Also in this battle and a pivotal part of it, Hammerhead Warships are seen and used to push the Star Destroyers into each other and onto the shield generator. We have Princess Leia to thank for those being part of the Rebel fleet.
We not only had Mustafar being the location of Vader’s spooky Sith castle, but we have a returning Coruscant as well, all be it seen from inside the Erso family’s windows. Also on Wobani (why is this an Obi-Wan anagram?) we saw the massive battle tanks that were used to fight the Wookie’s in Revenge of the Sith. They have been converted to prisoner transports now the war has ended. I hold my hand up, my son noticed that, not I.
Doctor Evazan and Walrus Man
Ok, I know he is called Ponda Babba but I only knew him from my Walrus Man figure (with big flippered feet, why was he always on desert planets?). This last cameo has annoyed some people, I am fine with it. They bump into Jyn and we get a classic Star Wars line repeated, it’s like a catchphrase. Luckily, they were just leaving Jedha or they would have been killed. Instead of that, they get killed and have limbs chopped off a few days later on Tatooine. What are the odds?
We had the brilliant return of Red and Gold Leader by means of some cleaned up unused clips from A New Hope. With their triumphant and victorious return alas comes a brief Red 5 cameo, setting us up for Luke’s ship in the eventual attack on the Death Star.
Now with this in mind one pilot we didn’t see was Wedge Antilles. He was Luke’s friend and fellow pilot through the OT battles. You’d have thought he would have been there, however, Gareth Edwards was too clever for that. He couldn’t have been there, it would have been a plot hole we would all have eventually jumped on. Wedges first sees the death Star in A New Hope and exclaims ‘Look at the size of that thing’. If Wedge had fought at Scarrif he would have already seen it. So, no Wedge.
Finally, one thing we probably all associate with Star Wars without even realizing it is the Wilheim Scream. It’s in all the Star Wars movies, and in many games as well as TV shows. If you are not sure what I am talking about it’s the scream the Stormtrooper makes as Luke shoots him before he swings across the shaft in A New Hope. When you hear it you will know what I mean. And, you will hear it in so many more movies once you recognize it.
I am sure I have missed a ton of other great things, so feel free to let me know.
Thanks for reading.
