A new Star Wars trilogy of films has been announced that will be overseen by Rian Johnson. This comes alongside the news that a new live action Star Wars TV show will be heading to the new Disney streaming service...
Rian Johnson will be overseeing a new trilogy of films set in a corner of the Star Wars galaxy that has never been explored previously.
Although the new movies will be set in the Star Wars galaxy they will be separate from the Skywalker saga and be set in a "corner of the galaxy" never before explored. This could be taken to mean a section of the galaxy that hasn't been seen onscreen previously, or that the trilogy will be set in a time period that has never been explored previously. Personally I think that latter is most likely. Find out why below.
New canon and become a bloated beast that I imagine the story group are having trouble managing. With so many stories being told now on film, in TV shows, comic books, novels and games, it's getting more and more likely that canon will be broken by an errant story element (ahem, Yoda's lightsaber anyone?). Could the choice to boot up a new set of films away from the Skywalker story be motivated by the need to tell stories that are unencumbered by canon.
Only time will tell where these stories will be set and what is motivating that decision, but some things are very clear. Rian Johnson will oversee the trilogy. He will write and direct the first entry and will guide the sequels to the screen.
There is no release date or pattern for these new films. So if the bi-annual release schedule remains in place, this could require new talent for each film. But if the new trilogy were to be released every three years, perhaps Rian could direct each. Much like George with the prequels. Could we see A Star Wars Story entry in the off years, and maybe continued Skywalker movies between those? Imagine a Star Wars Story entry in 2020, the first of the new trilogy in 2021, and Skywalker movie in 2022 and then Episode II of the new trilogy in 2023! Wouldn't we be spoiled!
Alongside this news was the announcement of a live action Star Wars TV show coming to the Disney streaming service, possibly by the end of 2019. The news came on a Disney Shareholders call via CEO Bob Iger.
Personally I find the news to be incredibly exciting and so I am adding a new goal to the Talk Star Wars Patreon. When we hit 1700 patrons we will launch a show dedicated to the Live Action show. This will be a Patreon only podcast and I'm hoping to get this off the ground before the show launches so we can cover the news on the run up to its release. If you're not yet a Talk Star Wars Patron, and you're interested in some exclusive Star Wars podcast, head here and sign up now!
