/Film are reporting the Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail has had meeting with Lucasfilm executives in relation to an upcoming Star Wars project...
The report suggests that Sam is being considered as the writer for an upcoming Star Wars Story project, presumably the missing 2020 project originally announced as a part of this release cycle. The movie is believed to be an Obi-Wan stand alone film.
Sam, who is represented by Bryan Lourd, father of Billy Lourd, is the creator of Mr. Robot (insert Mr. Droid joke here), and has even directed a number of episodes of the show. Early indications are that Sam has been approached to write the next stand alone, but it is in keeping with the LFL model to offer new directors a spot behind the camera.
I have seen season one of Mr. Robot and found it to be an extremely original, intelligent and compelling drama, with style to spare. Although I'm not sure the Mr. Robot's stye screams Obi-Wan movie to me. I'd be more interested in a Sam Esmail written Underworld movie. Maybe following a character like Cad Bane, rather than a venerable Jedi Knight. Still, it's very early days yet.
Expect more solid information closer to D23, when I'm expecting LFL to make significant announcements about the last movie in this release cycle and the slate of future stand alone and saga films.
What do you make of the news that Sam Esmail is connected to Star Wars? Are you are fan of Mr. Robot? And do you feel the show should be renamed Mr. Droid to fit into canon? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
