There will be more Star Wars movies after 2020. What will they be? Come to think of it, what will the 2020 movie be? Lets look at three options...
So Bob Iger just told us that he and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, have met to review everything that's coming our way in the terms of Star Wars movies. Here's what he had to say:
So lets get caught up. This year we get Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which will be followed next December by Star Wars Episode VIII. The following May (2018) will bring us the still untitled Han Solo movie (likely this will carry the A Star Wars Story sub heading), and then we will be getting Episode IX in May 2019. An then that's it. That's everything we know for sure.
There has been a lot of talk about what the third A Star Wars Story film will be (Boba Fett anyone?), but all we know for sure is that a writer has been secured.
So what might we see in (possibly) May 2020? Here are three options:
The smart money will be on the 2020 feature being the much rumoured Boba Fett film. Boba Fett is a sure fire hit, not just at the box office, but in related media and merchandising. Many believe that the film Josh Trank was attached to what was the Boba Fett picture, but could this still be high on Lucasfilms list of things to do? Or might we be getting...
It makes sense to me that Rogue One will get a sequel when the film is (inevitably) a hit this December. We even have a story in the system; the raid to secure the second Death Star plans. Remember when Mon Mothma said, "Many Bothans died to bring us this information.." don't you just want to see that? Meet those Bothans and see their adventure? What about the survivors or Rogue One? Wouldn't they make a good choice for the team that gets the plans to Palpatine's bigger and better space station. Just remember going in, that this mission was always fated, as we know Palpatine set a trap for Luke that would eradicate the pesky Rebellion once and for all. Another great opportunity in a sequel to Rogue One would be to involve live action versions of the Star Wars Rebels crew. I would love it if we learned that these characters we have grown to love over the many seasons of the Star Wars Rebels TV show, were actually tied closely to the events of Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi. But what about a more personal story...
Ewan McGregor seems keen, and he is about the right age to do the job, why not get the ball rolling on some Obi-Wan Kenobi films? These would be very different films to the ones we are used to as they would most likely the confined to the deserts of Tatooine. Fear not though, there is room in the Star Wars universe to tell small personal stories that have a western like tone to them. Star Wars owes a debt to movies like Seven Samurai, and Hidden Fortress and westerns like the Magnificent Seven just so happen to be homages/adaptations of these films also. So how about a Star Wars version of Magnificent Seven, with Obi-Wan as the lead character, righting wrongs in the Jundland Wastes. How about a take of True Grit with Old Ben Kenobi in the Rooster role? I'm on board for that. Hey, I'm onboard for a trilogy of western style Obi-Wan films. Personally, I'd love it.
We also need to consider that there is a good chance that Rogue One and Han Solo might inspire sequels themselves. So the 2020 movie may well be a sequel to either of those films. Its also quite likely that the films that come in 2021 and later will be sequel to these a Star Wars Story films. Could we be seeing a delay in getting future saga entries? A delay that will allow the filmmakers to capitalise on the popularity of the new characters and actors and fill a decade will Star Wars Story sequels, and then return with episodes X, XI and XII which could bring back Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver as older versions of the The Force Awakens characters.
What do you think? Will we get a delay in saga films after Episode IX whilst Lucasfilm explore these new Star Wars Stories? Could the sequels to Rogue One and Han Solo and possibly Boba Fett the gap whilst we wait for further saga entries? Or do you want Kathleen Kennedy and co to jump immediately into another Star Wars saga trilogy, and that is what will hit screens in 2021? Leave your thoughts in the comments below....
