Below is some tasty news on Laura Dern's character in Episode VIII. It's really spoiler heavy so please think carefully before reading it...
The news came via MakingStarWars.net, the same report that described Poe Dameron's new clothing in VIII, but I thought it would be a good idea to break it off so as to minimise the risk of inadvertantly spoiling the story. Read on it your a not bothered about Episode VIII spoilers.
Ok, here goes. Jason Ward over at MakingStarWars.net reports that Laura Dern will in fact be playing a lead figure in the Resistance, and that she will in fact be in command of a starship. See below.
- Laura Dern is a leader of the Resistance.
- Leia’s ship is ambushed and she is blasted through space.
- Leia ends up in a coma.
- Laura Dern’s character then takes over Resistance command, but makes things far worse.
- With this in mind, Poe takes control of the situation and becomes the interim leader of the Resistance.
- In regards to the way Dern is portrayed, we are meant to not be sure if she is good or bad.
This sounds absolutely credible to me and I'm really excited by the prospect. I like the idea that there will be some sort of power play within the Resistance leadership and that it will result in Poe Dameron taking centre stage. I wonder if these character's respective paths will mirror a larger theme of the Republic (see Dern) wanting to take more of a military stance against the First Order, which might result in the Resistance (see Fisher) being minimised ' sidelined. If that's true then the Repiublic might be responsible for many, many deaths as the First Order Strikes Back (hopefully not the title) against this uprising.
It might make for an interesting dynamic to have the Resistance, lead by General Leia, opt for a more low key, guerilla style fight, with the Republic itself making more of a show of its resistance (with a small r) to the First Order. This is all wild, unsubstantiated speculation mind you, and I'm just spit balling ideas, but I think it would provoke the First Order if the Republic were to make a stand. It might even echo the way Palpatine disolved the Imperial Senate during the events of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. I don't know, what do you think is going on between Laura Dern and Carrie Fisher's characters in VIII? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
