Will Luke and Leia reunite in The Last Jedi? It's a question that has been foremost on my mind since the sad passing of Carrie Fisher last year. We have one last chance to see these two incredible characters together again. There are some wonderful insights over on EW.com in Anthony Breznican's coverage. See what Rian has to say on the subject below. Warning, this could be considered a spoiler...
Ask Rian Johnson if Luke and Leia will reunite in The Last Jedi and this is what you get -
Rian is keen to keep the answer to the question of a reunion a surprise for the actual movie (which is a relief) but that enigmatic statement above doesn't fill me with confidence.
I really want to see these two together again in The Last Jedi for two reasons. In terms of the in-universe, narrative reason, I feel these two need to reconnect to comfort each other over the losses of Han Solo and indeed, Leia's son Ben, who has surely gone over to the dark side. Whats more is we need to know why Luke resisted his sisters call to action during the events of The Force Awakens. The Resistance needs Luke Skywalker why did he stay away? Mark Hamill himself indicates that this is the real question we should all be asking at this point.
The real world reasons I want to see Luke and Leia together again is a much sadder reason. In The Force Awakens, we had a chance to reunite the trio a the core of Star Wars, Luke Leia and Han. But that wasn't taken advantage of. With the death of Han Solo in that movie, we lost the chance to ever see Luke and Han together again. The closest we get is seeing a haunted Luke Skywalker on the bridge of the Falcon in a recent TV spot. So getting Luke and Leia together is the closest we will ever get to that moment. Getting these legacy players together onscreen to interact, to share the screen and exchange dialogue that may address those important narrative points I mentioned before, is incredibly important. What worries me is that there was a desire to leave that open for Episode IX, which can never deliver on that promise in the light of recent events.
However this plays out, I'm going to be deeply moved. If we get that reunion I will be movies by its poignancy, and if we don't, I will be rocked by the tragically missed opportunity.
