Kylo Ren's lightsaber has a jagged blade because the crystal powering it is cracked. I had a theory about the crystal and why it was cracked, but I'm beginning to believe there is another more compelling reason for the cracked crystal. Read on for more...
So my initial theory was that Kylo Ren had Bazine Netal retrieve Darth Vader's lightsaber, recovered from the surface of Endor after the Death Star exploded, and that he used the damaged crystal in his own weapon. This theory ties together the events of The Perfect Weapon and plays on the Vader worship we know to be at the heart of Kylo Ren.
I was happy with this theory until some members of the Talk Star Wars VIP facebook group started to share their thoughts on the matter. There are a few canon reasons why this theory doesn't completely work and then a tweet made its way to me that demonstrated Pablo Hidalgo's position on Vader's Lightsaber.
Fortunately during our podcasts I had started to form a few other theories about Ben Solo and the reasons he may have fallen from the light side of the Force and betrayed his uncle, Luke Skywalker.
Before I share this theory I need to point out that he image in the header for this post is a version of the scene in The Force Awakens. It's a frame from Rey's Force vision where she sees Kylo and the Knights of Ren standing in the rain surrounded by bodies. In this version of the image you can see Kylo Ren holding Luke's green, Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi lightsaber, but the shot was altered in the final movie so we never get a look at what Kylo is holding. If anything. Why remove Luke's lightsaber from this shot?
With Luke's green lightsaber...
So here is my new theory about Kylo Ren, Ben Solo's fall at Luke's school and that green lightsaber.
We have learned through the Ahsoka novel that Sith Inquisitors steal Kyber Crystals from Jedi and "bleed" them until they surrender to their new master and turn red as a result of the process. What if Ben Solo bled Luke's green crystal from the Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi lightsider in order to claim it as his own and he went a little too far, causing the crystal to crack.
This would explain why the shot of Luke's saber was removed from The Force Awakens, because that crystal can't new in two places at once (assuming the crystal was still in Luke's hilt at this point) and it would explain the rumours we have heard that Luke doesn't use a lightsaber in The Last Jedi. He simply has a cane, and possibly and stick to scare off the Porgs that live on Ahch-To.
There were a number of lightsaber story elements that were altered during The Force Awakens' production. From the legendary tumbling saver opening shot to the shot of Maz Kanata passing Anakin's lightsaber to Leia. There was clearly another line of story telling that included the lightsaber that got removed. Will we learn that Kylo's blade was once his Uncle's in The Last Jedi? Will Luke reclaim it and heal the crystal, turning it white by Episode IX? Leave your thoughts in the comments below...
