This morning I watched this short fan made trailer for Kenobi: A Star Wars Story, and i have to say, it gave me chills. Watch the trailer below....
The trailer is basically a series of shots from Ewan McGregor's movie Last Days In The Desert, intercut with a few shots from Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith. It really shows the potential for a Kenobi film. I love the idea of Obi-Wan spending his time in the deserts of Tatooine reflecting on the mistakes he made with Anakin, torturing himself over the death of Padme and using the time to commune with Qui-Gon.
The trailer is close to perfect with a great choice of John Williams' music as the score. A reasonable shot of a CGI Star Destroyer hovering over the desert surface hinting at an Imperial presence of the outer rim planet and just the right amount of Star Wars footage mixed in.
There are a couple of missed opportunities here though, one of which involves the woman who appears in one shot with Ewan's Jesus/Obi-Wan. This appears to be Man Of Steel and Daredevil actress Ayelet Zurer who is credited on IMDB as playing mother. I suspect this shot could have been tweaked to include either Natalie Portman's Padme or Pernilla August's Schmi Skywalker.
The other misstep is using the ghost of Qui-Gon in the final shot. I suspect the use of Liam Neeson saying "Obi-Wan" over the black at the end would have been enough.
The fact that I'm giving this so much thought is testament to just how well judged this fan made trailer is. It's made me think about the possibilities of an Obi-Wan movie. Seeing Luke as a little boy, his potential fascination with this mysterious figure from the desert. How Owen and Beru manage with this crazy old wizard haunting the wings, fully aware of the legacy the young boy is burdened with.
With an actor of Ewan's caliber showing interest in making a movie set between Sith and A New Hope, it seems like a criminal waste not to take advantage and make the film. I'm sure there is room for a small, western like personal movie in the Star Wars release schedule, and maybe that's what Kathleen Kennedy is waiting for. Get the Star Wars franchise up and running again before slowing in down with such deliberately paced films.
What do you think? Would you want a movie like the Kenobi movie this fan made trailer promises? Leave your thoughts note comments below....
