A couple of outlets are jumping on some Woody Harrelson related news this morning, news that is based on a dubious question directed at Woody during his visit to the Variety Studio. Watch the video below...
The suggestion is that Woody confirmed that his role is the Legends character Gariis Shrike, former mentor to Han Solo who returns to collect the bounty in the scoundrels head at some point prior to the events of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. The problem is the question is such deep cut, and asked in such a mumbled and indirect way that Woody, who is also being warned by his fellow guests not to answer the question either way, actually, in my opinion answers the wrong question.
The question asked is, "It's been revealed that you are the Han Solo mentor. Can you confirm that it's Gariss Shrike, or what can you tell us?" To which Woody responds, "Confirm what?" The interviewer then mumbles, "that you are playing the character of Gariss..." There is then a lot of banter amongst the panelists before Woody eventually says yes. But yes to what? That he is playing the mentor to Han Solo? Probably, even though that detail hasn't been confirmed by Lucasfilm.
To run with this as confirmation right now is a little foolhardy. The interviewer had an ideal opportunity here, to ask a direct and clear question, a closed question that required a simple yes or no: Is your character in the Han Solo movie named Gariss Shrike? That way Woody could have said yes it is, no it isn't, or there is no way I'm answering that. This mumbled indirect mess of a question, which requires deep knowledge of Star Wars lore, and can be easily missed by a actor new to the series, is so incredibly flimsy, that suggesting its an indication of anything is ridiculous.
I came across the news in a Google alert this morning and outlet that ran with it as fact most likely did so for hits on their site. If anything this video proves that Woody will probably need some coaching from Lucasfilm on how to handle these types of questions now that he is a part of the Star Wars family. It's just to easy to wander in areas that can result in an actor revealing way too much to the fans. Just ask Mad Mikkelsen or Jiang Wen.
