Could Rey be returning to Jakku in Episode IX? The answer is yes if a couple of supporting artists from The Force Awakens are correct...
MakingStarWars.net have a post that references a podcast interview with two supporting actors from The Force Awakens named Mel Pickup and Mark Pickup who suggest the production for Episode IX will be heading back to Abu Dhabi next year. Abu Dhabi was the location used for Jakku in The Force Awakens, and so the conclusion is: Jakku will feature in the new movie.
It should be said that the producers may choose to use the location for a new planet, or indeed Tatooine if they found the production there to be favourable. Having said that, a return to Jakku makes sense to me, and here is why.
When George made Star Wars he was an auteur film maker. He told stories that very closely mirrored his own life. in THX-1138, American Graffiti and Star Wars, the protagonists all escaped the confines of their quite limiting hometowns. Each went onto to freedom of a sort. This was George's story. He was faced with a choice, stay in small town Northern California, or pursue his dream to go and become a filmmaker. One can imagine how it feels to return to the small town you left behind when you have conquered the world. Or, indeed, saved a galaxy.
In Star Wars we have seen this beat twice. Both Anakin and Luke leave Tatooine and go on to bigger and better things, only to return to the small world they left behind as much more powerful and accomplished people. Is Rey about to do the same?
In The Force Awakens Rey was practically paralysed with fear at the prospect of leaving Jakku. The fear was that those she longed for would return one day and she feared she would miss them if she left for too long. It would be interesting, and fitting for Rey to return to this small world as a Jedi, having accomplished incredible things, and see this world through fresh eyes. It is the path our heroes have walked before. I think it would fit perfectly into Rey's story.
What do you think? Will Rey return to Jakku in Episode IX? Does it sound too much like Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi and Luke's return to Tatooine? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
