BusinessInsider has a great interview with Joonas Suotamo on how the new Chewbacca star went from basketball player to Mighty Wookiee...
The 6'11" Joonas, wouldn't comment on which of Chewbacca's The Force Awakens scenes were his saying:
Joonas did, however, throw a little light on how one lands a coveted role such as Chewbacca's body double.
It seems clear that Joonas would have filmed the scenes that involved Chewie climbing ladders, running from Avto B, carrying an injured Finn from the Falcon, the sort of shots that would present the legendary Peter Mayhew from being in the fur. I'm wondering in Chewbacca's first scene may have in fact been Joonas, as Han and Chewie run up the gang way into the Falcon, through that door. It would be a shame if Chewies first scene in ten years 9he was in Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith) wasn't Peter.
I suspect Joonas will reprise the role, under the expert guidance of Peter Mayhew in Episodes VIII and IX, and beyond as Disney and Lucasfilm gear up to tell stories about a young Han Solo and his faithful co-pilot in stand alone movies. The first of these is being written by The Force Awakens and Indiana Jones scribe Lawrence Kasdan. When asked about future Wookiee work, Joonas answered with a cryptic:
Talk Star Wars has already officially welcomed Joonas into the Star Wars family, but I think this interview proves just how charming and respectful our new, part time, Chewbacca is. What a wonderful find.
