I was rewatching the Japanese The Force Awakens trailer today and one particular moment jumped out at me and I thought I would share a couple of thoughts...
Firstly, the moment was the shot of Rey (Daisy Ridley) weeping over what we all assume is a fallen comrade.
For the record, I believe this fallen comrade is Finn. I do not believe he is dead, but I do think he is injured. I have said that I believe Anakin's old Lightsaber, the one we see Finn light up in the trailer, is narratively cursed so that whenever it is used, the user has a sudden grisly fate. Even Han, after using it in Empire, has terrible luck after! So Finn goes into a duel with Kylo Renn, one he is ill equipped to survive.
It's the moment following that duel that seems the most impactful to me.
At the moment we see Rey's tear stained face look up we have some dialogue from Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o). The dialogue is as follows, "Hope is not lost this day, it is found." At this moment Rey is bathed in a white light.
Luke is the hope in A New Hope. Therefore Luke = Hope.
Luke is the McGuffin in The Force Awakens. The search for Luke seems to be driving the action in The Force Awakens.
Hope is not lost it is found. Is Rey bathed in the white light that accompanies Luke's first appearance in The Force Awakens? Has Luke just shown up to take on Kylo Ren and so save Rey and Finn from certain death? Think of it as a 'Gandalf The White' style heroic entrance just as all seems lost for our heroes.
Did J.J. Abrams give us a big hint at the third act reveal of Luke? Will Finn lose an arm during his battle with Kylo Ren? I'm not married to this theory, I just think the timing is somewhat interesting. I'd be interested to hear what you guys think, leave your opinions in the comments...
