We saw a slow release of new 6” Black Series figures throughout the Celebration weekend that included deluxe, exclusive, and wide release figures from all different eras of Star Wars. All of the figures announced at SWCO will be available this Fall with some coming as soon as this July as SDCC 2017 exclusives.
Hasbro kicked off the SWCO weekend early by announcing two deluxe sets; Rey with Jakku Speeder and Luke Skywalker with X-34 Landspeeder.
Hasbro made their first attempt at the 6” scale vehicles with TFA First Order Tie Fighter which landed a few years ago with a price tag of ~$150.00 (CAD). The Tie Fighter was a nice piece but it was very large and at that price point many collectors passed on it. The announcement of the two 6” scaled landspeeders is very exciting as the size, detail, and price point (<$100.00) is much more reasonable than TFA Tie Fighter. I wouldn’t expect these two deluxe sets to run stale on the pegs the same way the Tie Fighter did, so make sure to pick them up when you see them this Fall.
Luke Skywalker with X-34 Landspeeder - SDCC 2017 Exclusive
Luke Skywalker with his X-34 landspeeder is a perfect piece to release for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of ANH. The figure looks to have a new and much better head sculpt compared to the already released Black Series and Vintage Card Back versions of this figure and he also has a few more accessories including his Tatooine hat. The detail, paint applications, and scale of the X-34 landspeeder look fantastic. It is going to be very difficult to keep this one mint in box as it will look incredible displayed on a shelf.
I am a little disappointed that this was announced as a SDCC 2017 exclusive as it is a very desirable piece that is going to be hard and expensive to get. I am hoping that this gets a wide release similar to the Jabba the Hutt SDCC exclusive from a few years back.
Rey with Jakku Speeder
Rey with her Jakku speeder was the other early Celebration Black Series reveal and similar to the Luke set, it hits the right size and price point for collectors. Along with the speeder, we get the addition of her Jakku desert gear and accessories. Hasbro has added a lot to a figure we have seen drop in multiple waves over the last few years, making it a definite pick up.
Grand Admiral Thrawn Deluxe Set - SDCC 2017 Exclusive
Revealed at the Hasbro booth with Timothy Zahn and Dave Filloni on hand, the Grand Admiral Thrawn deluxe set was the most exciting Black Series announcement of SWCO (for me).
This is a realistic sculpt of the Rebels character in similar fashion to the Kanan, Sabine, and Ashoka figures we got in the last few waves of the Black Series. The sculpt looks fantastic and the packaging for the SDCC 2017 exclusive is incredible.
The packaging opens to reveal Thrawn’s office from Rebels with the iconic Ysalamiri above his head as he is flanked by some of the artifacts from Rebels including Hera’s Kalikori.
The Thrawn figure will get a regular wide release just without the exclusive packaging and related accessories.
Jaina Solo - 2016 Fan’s Choice Winner
It was announced at the SDCC 2016 Hasbro panel that Jaina Solo had won the 2016 Fan’s Choice Poll. With Hasbro giving the fans one of the Solo twins from Legends, they continue to show how committed they are to producing figures collector want. The sculpt on this figure looks great and hopefully down the road we can get Jacen Solo to complete the set.
Grand Moff Tarkin
Tarkin has seen a lot of focus since the Disney Universe reset with a novel (Tarkin by James Luceno), cameos in Star Wars: Rebels, a supporting role in Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel, and a surprise appearance in Rogue One. There is no better time for this character to be making his first appearance in the 6” scale. The detail looks great, capturing his iconic facial features and he comes with nicely scaled interrogation droid from ANH.
Clone Commander Gree - TRU Exclusive
This is the Clone Commander that Master Yoda decapitated during the battle of Kashyyyk after Order 66 was issued by the Emperor. This will be approximately the 9th variation of a Clone Trooper we are getting in the Black Series, but the paint applications and unique look of the figure makes it much more desirable than some other Clone iterations. The recent TRU exclusives (First Order Snow Trooper Commander & Hover Tank Pilot) have initially been released at a higher price point than the wide release figures and have both been heavily discounted after lingering on the pegs. Watch for this figure in the Fall and keep an eye out for price drops after its initial release.
Inferno Squadron Pilot - Gamestop/EB Games Exclusive
The Inferno Squadron will be the focus of the single-player campaign in Star Wars Battlefront II (November, 2017) and will have their origin story told in this years book titled Inferno Squad (July, 2017), that pick up right after the events on Rogue One. This is a very exciting figure and as a video game tie-in it is appropriate that it will be a Game Stop/EB Games exclusive.
Hasbro did confirm at SDCC 2016 that a Force Awakens Luke Skywalker was in development and I am surprised they didn't reveal him as the SDCC 2017 exclusive. I am sure we can expect that figure in the first few waves of The Last Jedi Black Series figures that will be revealed either at SDCC 2017 or hit the shelves at this years Force Friday in September.
All of these announcements add to the growing list of unreleased figures first shown at last years SDCC and were on display at SWCO (Lando, Emperor’s Royal Guard, Hera, Qui-Gon Jinn).
The Black Series line has become the pinnacle of modern Star Wars collecting with over 100 6” figures announced or released since they initially hit shelves in 2012. Expect more announcements at SDCC 2017 and maybe our first look at a figure from The Last Jedi.
