Han Solo A Star Wars Story
With Rogue One: A Star Wars Stor well and truly on it's way, and Star Wars Episode VIII now safely in production, I thought it might be fun to look ahead to 2018's Star Wars offering and maybe list a few things I'd like to see in the new Han Solo spin off film...
We don't know much about the second stand alone Star Wars film. We know that it will focus on Han Solo as a young man. We know that Lego movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be in the director's chair[s] and we know that the film will see Lawrence Kasdan return to scripting duties, only this time he will be joined by Jon Kasdan, his son. The only other thing we know is that Chewbacca will feature in the film. The movie is destined to hit theatres in the traditional May release window (24th in this case), marking the first time in Disney's reign a Star Wars movie has not been in cinemas over Christmas.
In terms of speculation, we have been following the audition process as every young man in Hollywood stepped forward to slip on the vest. With names as diverse as Anthony Ingruber and Dave Franco slowly dropping off of the list we are down to three hopefuls (at the time of writing), Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Reynor and Taron Egerton seem to be front runners, with Alden Ehrenreich the favourite. But when the lucky smuggler bags the role, what will he be doing?
The following is a list of three things I'd like to see in a Han Solo movie. I don't expect everything to make it into on script, and I've cheated a little by squeezing a couple of wants under each heading. I've also pro'd and con'd the list. Let's go...
When Han met Chewy
We have heard the story of how Han met Chewbacca and how the life debt became a thing, but is it canon? A lot of established Star Wars lore has been thrown out in the wake of the Disney acquisition, meaning things can be reimagined if so desired. So might we see Han meet Chewy for the first time? Pert of me wants to see this happen.
Pros - If the Kasdans do tackle this origin, and stick close to legends canon, we should see Han Solo as a young Imperial officer who balks at the way the Wookiee slaves are being treated and helps them escape, earning Chewbacca's devotion in the form of a life debt. Solo needs to flee (Finn style) and goes under ground, starting a life as a smuggler. We'd see Han in a new light and better understand his reluctance to go up against the Empire in A New Hope.
Cons - If this is the story being told, we can't expect much more. I'm sure it'll take act one to get our heroes together, and the chemistry we enjoy so much will be missing as they get to know each other. But this is an origin story after all, so aye that's the point.
Han gets the Millennium Falcon
We know that Han won the Millennium Falcon from Lando Calrissian, that's canon, because it's in Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, but I want to see it happen onscreen.
Pros - We will be plunged into Han Solo's world of smuggling and gambling, and we will see him in command of another ship. It will be be great to see some of Han's contemporaries, like Dash Rendar (who could then be canonised) and especially Lando Calrissian, who would need to be recast with a talented young actor. We'd see the Falcon before Solo made his special modifications and maybe even get to see the ship make the Kessel Run.
Cons - there aren't many cons to be had here. I'm especially interested to see if it was Han who took the Falcon on the Kessel Run, because it could easily have been Lando's accomplishment that he repurposes as his own. Maybe we will even get a glimpse at the Battle Of Tanab. This might serve to set up a Lando spin off film.
Crossing Jabba The Hutt
We know Han Solo jettisoned his cargo to avoid an "Imperial entanglement" which put him on Jabba The Hutt's most wanted list, but now we might get to see it. I'd be interested to see who Jabba uses alongside Han, maybe Boba Fett? In Star Wars Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi Han seems to be wary of Boba when they are on the barge, could there be an up close and personal story behind that?
Pros - You want action? This could be it. If Han is a spice runner for Jabba The Hutt, we might get a real close look at this underworld as our heroes move through it trying to survive. It could help set up Boba Fett for a potential spin off, give us a closer look at Jabba, get us back to Tatooine, and feature the Empire in a shadowy role as the thing our smugglers need to avoid at all costs.
Cons - Not so much an origin story as something we've been kind of familiar with all these years, it might draw fire from critics for playing it safe. If Han is supposed to be ten years younger than A New Hope, would this adventure be better suited for a later Han Solo solo movie? I got the impression the incident that upset Jabba was slightly more recent that this would be. Still want to see it though.
Those are my top three picks for adventures Han and Chewy could have in their own films, what about you? Leave your suggestions in the comments below, or email them to TalkStarWarsINFO@gmail.com and we will discuss them on the podcast.
