This weekend the Talk Star Wars Team went toes Rogue One together and during this, my fourth viewing of the movie I noticed something about General Davits Draven. He is a tool...
This little plot piece slipped past me in my previous viewings of the movie: Mon Mothma's original plan was to reveal Emperor Palpatine's true nature to the Imperial Senate, by bringing Galen Erso before the assembly on Coruscant and have him testify to the creation of a secret weapon of mass destruction. Had this plan been successful, the Rebellion surely would have gained more supporters and the Emperor would have been forced to dissolve the council sooner.
I was really quite surprised that Draven would then take Cassian Andor to one side and instruct him to ignore everything he had just heard in the beiefing and kill Galen Erso on sight! Is Draven an Imperial spy? Or is he just an idiot? Even when he fails to have Cassian assassinate the scientist, he instructs the Rebel Squadron to bomb the base. Now it's clear that he feels direct action is the only way forward here, but wouldn't Mon Mothma's original plan have been more successful? Surely that would have galvanised the Rebellion sooner than having to wait for the battle at Scarif to do that very thing. Just think about the Imperial Senators present on Yavin IV, who want to dissolve the Alliance right then and there because of the assault on Eadu! They would have been emboldened by the political coup and the reveal that Palpatine was about to reveal the Death Star.
I'm surprised that I missed this fine detail on my initial viewings I was probably too busy trying to spot Chopper, and it goes to show how valuable these additional screenings can be. Imagine all the extra stuff we will be seeing when this film is released on BluRay.
