Since the very start we have been able to count on one man to give us an insight into one of the newest characters in the Star Wars galaxy and that's Mads Mikkelsen. Mads plays Galen Erso, a character he, himself describes as the most guilty man on earth...
Mads was talking to IGN (via MakingStarWars.net) and said that he thinks, "he is the most guilty man in the world." Now, I've watched the clip and I'm not sure if he means Galen feels like the most guilty man in the world, or if he is the most guilty man due to his involvement with the creation of the Death Star. This is an important distinction. Check out his quote below.
I think its fair to assume, from what Mads says above, that Galen is taken by Krennic, and by extension The Empire, against his will. Perhaps he was motivated to leave to protect his wife and child, perhaps he was simply taken, kidnapped by The Empire. Either way I can see Galen feeling guilty for leaving Jyn alone. But what if there is more here. The synopsis of Rogue One Catalyst suggests Krennic mislead Galen to think the work he was doing was for the greater good. Is there a chance that Galen left almost willingly to complete work he started as a young man, work that would become the heart of the Death Star's super laser. That would be in keeping with the Oppenheimer comparisons we have heard for a long time. Wouldn't the sudden realisation that his life's work is about to become one of the most destructive forces in the galaxy, a weapon with the power to end billions of lives, be motivation enough for Galen to get a message to his daughter in a attempt to stop what is presumably, now beyond his control.
So I guess Galen is one of two things:
Is he a prisoner of the Empire forced to create something against his will?
Did Galen get caught up with the Empire and realise too late that his work would become such a devastating instrument, leading to his sending the Rebellion, the secret to destining it?
Id be interested in hearing your thoughts on the issue, drop them in the comments.
