First he seemed like a misstep, then he was a meme named TR-8R. Well now the First Order Stormtrooper who engaged, a Skywalker lightsaber wielding, Finn in The Force Awakens has an official name, a backstory and, perhaps more importantly, a Hot Toy action figure...
When The Force Awakens was first released we all had a similar complaint, "there wasn't enough Captain Phasma!" Indeed its seems fair to ask, why cast Gwendolyn Christie as Captain Phasma when the character was largely marginalized in the final cut of the film. One missed opportunity seemed to be the potential to have Finn face Phasma on Takodana after the assault on Maz Kanata's castle. It seemed fitting that Finn square off against the one person who might be more disappointed, in Finn, than anyone else. Instead Finn went up against an apparent nobody, a First Order Stromtrooper in riot gear.
Well it didn't take long before the Internet got to work, and the apparently nameless Stormtrooper soon became known as TR-8R. Named by fandom in honour of accusation bellowed at Finn, before the two engage in close quarter combat.
Well Star Wars and it's creators are nothing if not thorough, and soon after an TR-8R found himself with an official name and backstory. Say hello to FN-2199 or "Nines", seen below with red hair, seated at the back of the training area...
His name is FN-2199. But his friends call him “Nines.”
Here is an extract from StarWars.com about "Nines".
Not only is TR-8R now officially known as "Nines" but he has also been importalised as a Sideshow Collectables Hot Toy. Check it out below, and click the image to be take to the official website where you can preorder the double pack of the newly christened Nines and Finn.
What do you think of Nines, and his new place in Star Wars canon? Do you believe there was a missed opportunity here for J.J. Abrams to have given Captain Phasma more screen time? Will you be picking up the Hot Toy?
