Was Ben Affleck in in running to direct Star Wars The Force Awakens?
Batman-News.com is suggesting that Ben Affleck may have been in the running for the The Force Awakens directors chair before the job went to J.J. Abrams.
The claim comes following an interview Ben gave to a show called Any Given Wednesday with Bill Simmons on HBO. I haven't seen the episode due to regional restrictions, but I'm less concerned with what was said about the past and more concerned with the future of Star Wars, and Ben's possible involvement.
Let me state here for the record that I would fully support Ben Affleck helming a Star Wars movie. Last year I was involved in a debate on Movie Geeks Film News, where we listed the directors that most excited us for the future and I listed Ben as my one to watch. I must admit I hadn't given his helming a Star Wars film a great deal of thought at the time, but now it's hard to imagine why!
I love every one of Ben Affleck's movies as director. I think he has shown enormous talent in handling exceptionally tense subject matter whilst developing very complex characters. I'd offer Titus Welliver in Gone Baby Gone as an example, or Jeremy Renner in The Town. Just imagine Ben bringing that level of craft to a Star Wars Story about any number of characters in the Star Wars canon, maybe even Boba Fett?
Of all the directors emerging as leaders in their generation, Ben is one that seems to have everything a Star Wars movie needs going forward, including an interest in genre film. What do you think? Would you like to see Ben Affleck direct a Star Wars movie? Who else would you like to see take a crack at a Star Wars movie in the coming years? Leave your thoughts in the comments below....
