I just got done watching a commercial for O2 Priority which featured C-3PO, R2-D2 and BB-8 together for the first time, and I suddenly realised something about C-3PO (and no it's not the red arm, duh!)...
The short advert seems to be set on Jakku (one sun) and features Artoo and Threepio making their way across the desert sands, the way the did in Star Wars. They eventually meet up with BB-8, who seems better equipped to deal with sand I must say. As I was watching the clip I noticed Threepio's legs are both gold now...
C-3PO always had one silver leg from the knee down, in the original trilogy, and ended Jedi that way. I've never really known why, I think George indicated that it was due to his being made from junk. I'm sure I heard that artist who created the Threepio costume died before its completion and I've always liked the idea that the silver leg was a tribute to her.
I jumped over to StarWars.com to look at the officially released image of Artoo and Threepio together and, guess what, you can't see both his legs! I doubt the O2 advert would include a version of the C-3PO costume that was not screen accurate so it appears that post Jedi, C-3PO was made whole, if only for a short time before that red arm comes into play.
There will be a comic book released in February that explains what happened to C-3PO and caused the loss of that arm. In the meantime I'm willing to read way too much into it and suggest that his condition reflects the tone of the galaxy post Jedi; that there was a period of rebuilding where things were made the way they should be, but it was short lived and soon, rot set in and a new darkness arose. As the darkness spread, things started to fall apart. Hence the red arm.
You know it's interesting to me that the only time we've seen C-3PO in tip top condition was when things were darkest for Star Wars. In Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith C-3PO was perfect. In the two movies prior his was a skeletal robot, then dressed in reclaimed, trashy parts. In the original trilogy he was at best, missing the gold leg coverings for one leg, and at worst he was in pieces.
What do you make of Threepio having two gold legs again? Do you have a theory about the red arm? Check out my Code Red theory below.
