A couple of weeks ago I heard a rumour that original trilogy sculptor, Brian Muir had joined the crew of Rogue One A Star Wars Story. I reached out to Mr. Muir for confirmation but, unfortunately I didn't get a response directly, although the next day, Mr. Muir posted an announcement on his facebook page that he had indeed started work on Rogue One. What does this mean for the first spin off film? Let's speculate below...
Firstly, here is Mr. Muir's announcement:
So what do we know about Brian Muir and why is this so important? Well Brian worked on the original Star Wars film, which would go on to be known as Episode IV A New Hope. His main contribution to that film, was a big one. You see Brian sculpted Darth Vader's mask. He was responsible for bringing Ralph McQuarrie's designs to glorious life, and not only the Dark Lord Of The Sith, but his white armour clad minions, the Stormtroopers too.
Now, we know Brian worked on The Force Awakens, so I'm guessing we can speculate what his involvement in Rogue One might be, but I'm concerned that this speculation might be a tad spoilery so if you're avoiding spoilers you should jump out now, but if not you can Go Rogue with me after this snazzy poster:
Return Of The Sith Lord
I'm willing to bet folding money that Brian Muir was brought into Star Wars The Force Awakens to build that burnt out Darth Vader helmet that Kylo Ren gets all chatty with in the trailers. Who better to bring that visage back to life that the original creator.
I'm also willing to bet he is currently crafting a sparkling new one to be seen in Rogue One A Star Wars Story.
There has been a lot of talk about the return of Darth Vader in next year's Star Wars offering, with some people speculating we may even see Hayden Christensen reprise the role. I think there's something to this theory and I think Brian Muir's joining the production adds some credibility to it to boot. Why else would you bring Brian in at this late stage? The film's been shooting for months, and they seem to have plenty of Stormtroopers!
Let's not forget that there was a leaked image of several different designs for other Stormtrooper helmets too:
Everything seems to be pointing to Brian Muir having been brought in to provide a new Darth Vader costume. There are reports that a chest plate has been seen in the prop room too. So could Vader be set to stride across our screens again in late 2016?
I'm saying yes. In fact I'm saying hell yes! It's the perfect time frame for Vader to be featured and it would provide some interesting insight into what is going through Anakin's mind at this point. Yes I said Anakin. If the Hayden rumours are true we might get a look under the helmet at that scarred face and damaged soul. Why else would you bring back Hayden if not to lift the lid here and there?
If Brian Muir is working on a Darth Vader mask for Rogue One A Star Wars Story, and if Hayden is involved, I hope they do one thing: scale the suit down to fit the actor. The main issue in Revenge Of The Sith was that Hayden was lost inside that Prowse size suit. Just shrink it down a couple of sizes and enlarge Vader in post, Lord Of The Rings style.
Whatever the plan, I'm thrilled Brian Muir is involved. I've spent some time up close and personal with his creation and it's a thing of beauty. Good luck on the project Mr. Muir, I look forward to seeing the results.
What do you think, will we see Darth Vader in Rogue One? Can you imagine Hayden Christensen making a return to the Star Wars universe? Or will any Vader appearance be in the background? Leave your thoughts in the comments below...
