George Lucas wanted C-3PO to be a fast talking used car salesman type character until Anthony Daniels stepped into the golden suit and inhabited the character so completely. Since then George has greeted Anthony's arrival on set with the cry "Star Wars has arrived." Rolling Stone Magazine got to Talk Star Wars with one of the few actors to appear in every single movie so far...
Its true that Artoo and Threepio standing together are, at least to me the quintessential image of Star Wars. Something about those colours together, their desperate height, Threepio's hand resting on his best friends dome. It's just such an evocative image. So what does the man boLlted inside the suit think about Star Wars and his place in it? Well you can read the full interview here but I have some choice extracts below.
On being present and the first table read with the cast of The Force Awakens:
On C-3PO's origins:
It's no secret that Anthony Daniels and his counterpart Kenny "Artoo Deetoo" Baker have a rocky relationship. Some of the things Anthony Daniels is reported to have said to Kenny Baker are pretty rough. This how Anthony handled being asked about the feud.
Finally, Anthony spoke about the fans, what the fans mean to him and how he feels when they approach him with love and gratitude for C-3PO:
It's good to hear from one of the Legacy cast members, especially one so close to Star Wars fandom. Anthony has been connected to C-3PO in a way that's unrivalled by his cast mates. Taking on the role in animated shows and TV Specials, and appearing at countless events in that gold jacket. For someone who occasionally gives the impression that C-3PO is a burden, or that Star Wars derailed a more respectable career, Anthony has embraced the character like no one else. That's something that should be celebrated.
