This post contains a major spoiler about the Star Wars Rebels episode Twin Suns, which aired over the weekend. If you have yet to watch that episode, move along. For those who have seen it, and have been struggling with the major "reveal", read on...
This is now a spoiler zone. You have been warned.
I will leave the Star Wars Rebels Twin Suns review to Marc at Blueharvest, but I had to comment about one specific aspect of the episode. An apparent reveal from Obi-Wan that has really divided the Star Wars Rebels fanbase.
In the episode, Obi-Wan defeats Maul, and as Maul lay dying in Obi-Wan's arms (a moment of true compassion by the way, something I really liked), he asks if the person Obi-Wan was protecting is the Chosen One. To which Obi-Wan answers yes.
Now this has ruffled a lot of feathers. In our Talk Star Wars VIP facebook group alone there was a lengthy thread, with some very different readings of that moment. Myself, I'm going to put this to the back of my mind until The Last Jedi. If the subject comes up there, I will consider it relevant, otherwise it's just another statement by the unreliable narrator, Obi-Wan "Pantaloon Inferno" Kenobi, who has always played fast and loose with the truth. In fact there is a warning about the truth, from the man himself, in this episode, just moments before the "reveal" Here is what he tells Ezra about the truth -
There are a number of reasons why Obi-Wan's statement could mean nothing to canon. The Chosen One may be one of a number of prophesies the Jedi and the Sith have access to. Obi-Wan may not have all the evidence to draw this conclusion. He may believe Luke is the chosen one because he witnessed Anakin's "death" and certainly does not believe his old friend can return from the depths of the dark side, and the clutches of Darth Vader, a monster he helped create. Also, we, the viewers, know canon, and from our point of view, Anakin did return from the darkness and through love and compassion, redeemed himself and destroyed the Sith.
So you'll see Anakin is the Chosen One, from a certain point of view...
