Tron 3 Is Dead

News broke on friday that Disney has pulled the plug on their sequel to 2010’s Tron Legacy. There is no indication why the movie won’t be moving forward but The Hollywood Reporter, who first addressed the issue suggests that the poor performance of Tomorrowland may have rattled some nerves when it comes to live action Disney movies.

/Film are commenting that, even though the feature never officially got the green light, it may have be called Tron: Ascension and would have followed on immediately from Tron: Legacy, which itself was a long over due sequel to the 1982 original.

If rumours were to be believed we may have seen “Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski and stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde return to reprise their roles in the sequel. There was also talk of Jared Leto and Olivia Munn being desired additions, both actors have entered huge properties recently, Suicide Squad and X-Men Apocalypse respectively, so perhaps their perceived cache was a last ditch attempt to keep interest in the project as it developed? Whatever the reason, Tron is dead…

For now…

When a feature can spawn a sequel nearly 30 years after its release then it has a following. If the franchise kept those fans after Legacy then there may just be hope for Ascension at some point in the future. Who knows, maybe Garrett Hedlund will get the digital doppelgänger next time around. It may even help his performance.

End of line.

Above is the VFX proof of concept that got Legacy the green light. Lets hope we see something like this again in twenty years…
