Star Wars Celebration has been an absolute riot this year and the influx of news has been almost too much to handle. As we were just catching our breath after the awesome and emotional trailer for The Force Awakens, Gareth Edwards has taken to the stage in Anaheim and given us our first look and plot details of the standalone outing, Rogue One.
Kathleen Kennedy and Kiri Hart were also with Edwards on stage to announce the official names for the coming standalone movies as “anthology films.”
Rogue One will take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and Felicity Jones who has already been cast will be part of a rebel group tasked with stealing the plans for the first Death Star.
Edwards showed a teaser for the film but as filming doesn’t start until the summer this year, Industrial Light & Magic showed some lovely rendered footage with a voice-over by Obi-Wan Kenobi from A New Hope. The footage gave us a glimpse of the tone of the movie and some nerdgasm inducing moments including a shot of the Death Star.
He went on to explain that Rogue One is more a war movie, “It’s the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It’s complicated, layered; a very rich scenario in which to set a movie.” He also mentioned that we can expect to not see much Jedi action.
Personally, I can’t wait to see other stories in the rich universe of Star Wars and Gareth Edwards seems a fantastic choice to take the reigns on such a project. Check back here at mgfn.co.uk for any Star Wars news as it unfolds.
May the force be with you…
