Star Wars Insights | The Force Awakens Trailer

The Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer has finally arrived and it is mind blowing. Watch the trailer below and then join me as I take a look at some of the key moments, what they mean for specific characters and whether we have had any of our theories confirmed…

Lets start with Rey.

We open with Rey salvaging what appears to be that downed Star Destroyer and in voiceover we hear Lupita Nyong'o’s Maz Kanata ask, “Who are you?” to which Rey replies, “I’m no one.” For the longest time people have been speculating that Rey is either a Skywalker or a Solo, could this be a strong message that Rey is a new, original character that we will get to follow as she starts on her adventure? Personally I hide so.

I suspect Rey will be this trilogy’s Luke. We get a lot of similar notes here, with Rey existing on Jakku, moving through the wastelands like Luke would have done during A New Hope. We also get to see her wistfully gaze up at ships leaving the planet, dreaming, perhaps, of the day she will get out into the wider world.

There was theory that Rey was left on Jakku by her parents with a promise of their return. That this is why Rey has remained on Jakku, waiting to be rescued. Maybe we are getting a look at some of those elements in this trailer?

Finn

Straight off the back of Rey’s introduction we get a look at our other leads story. We get a look at the First Order army, and hear Finn say he has been raised for one thing his whole life, but now he has nothing to fight for. I suspect this indicates that Finn and his brethren were raised from birth ti be stormtroopers, that the days of clones are gone, the days of enlisted troops are gone, that this new Empire, The First Order, strip children of their humanity and enslave them as soldiers. Unless they are clones, that would be a nice call back…

We see The TIE Fighter spin out of control toward the surface of Jakku and then we see Finn (in Poe’s clothes) walk up to a dune overlooking a settlement. We have covered Finn’s potential arc in other editions of Insights, you can seek them out and have a read for more detail.

Finn’s story seems to be following Han’s EU story: a disillusioned Imperial looking for a new life, but also has elements of Luke’s, especially as we see him holding a particular weapon later in the trailer…

Kylo Ren

I have long suspected that Kylo Ren was a Darth Vader fanboy. More than that i believe he might be his grandson (son to Leia and Han) and what we’ve seen here makes me even more sure that this is what we will see come December.

Our first glimpse go Kylo sees him on the bridge of a StarDestroyer, Darth Vader style with his hood down giving us a good look at that helmet. Shortly after we see him addressing Vader’s mask with the lines we are now familiar with from those toys. “I will finish what you’ve started.”, and then we see him “torturing” Poe Dameron, presumably with his Force ability. Kylo Ren is our bad guy kids, and he aint playing.

Shortly after we get a look at some shots of the Falcon evading TIE Fighters over Jakku. This is certainly the IMAX sequence of the film and as we know, Rey will be in the pilots seat for this sequence.

Remember at Celebration when we heard the words “Chewy, we’re home” and every man of 40 started crying like a baby? Well I think we get a t look at the scenes immediately after that here. If you were wondering who Han was pointing that blaster at then brace yourself, because I think its Rey and Finn. We get a couple of shots of Han talking to Rey and Finn about the Dark Side and about the Jedi and it makes it quite clear that these things are treated as legends by the people who populate the universe. Is that the effect of great PR by the First Order? Or were the events of the original trilogy a little more low key than we had imagined?

Next we get a wicked cool shot of The Millennium Falcon screaming through hyperspace (very J.J.s Star Trek) which is followed by some action shots of aerial battles. Its all very beautiful.

There is a very cool shot of Kylo Ren and some troops in the rain. Maybe one of those troops in Captain Phasma, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Kylo Renn had his own Seven Samurai group of elite troops, and thats who we are seeing here.

Ok, here are some really cool bits. First. We get a shot of Han, Rey and Finn approaching a castle. This is certainly the castle of Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o), where it is rumoured the group will share a vision that recounts the journey of Luke’s lightsaber. Will this be required in order to locate Luke? I still believe that this is a trap set by Kylo Renn to lead him to Luke. We know that he wants to destroy the “Last Jedi” which I’m assuming means Luke. Is this where that journey begins..?

There is a great shot of Captain Phasma.

There are some awesome images of our band of heroes in action…

We see Poe and Finn exchange a pre-battle glance as the Resistance prepares for war. This reminds me of the base on Yavin in A New Hope before the assault on the first Death Star, and the similarities might not end there either…

In the image above there is a trench which I believe to be a Death Star style trench on a planet that has been converted into a giant weapon. We have heard for a while now that the Starkiller base is capable of destroying an entire solar system. I think we got a glimpse of that base of the poster on sunday, and what we initially though might be a ray shield over the trench is actually an atmosphere. This will certainly up the stakes.

The real trial however, will be very up close and personal. For starters we get a nice reunion between the rogue and the Princess, and then we get a look at a lightsaber duel.

I suspect the shot of Han and Leia takes place before the resistance launches its attack on the Starkiller base with Han, Chewy, Finn and Rey setting off on their own mission. A mission that will bring them into conflict with Kylo Ren. In the images below we see Finn squaring off against Kylo Ren, lightsaber drawn. Kylo Ren isn’t wearing his helmet in this image. Maybe that is because he has revealed his true identity to his prey, and especially to Han Solo, who I think we will learn is his father. Perhaps this is where Solo dies and Finn fights Ren, with disastrous consequences. Look closely at the last image in this sequence and you see what looks like Rey crouched over Finn’s body. Will Finn, who we know is returning for Episode VII, be critically wounded during the fight? Maybe its Finn who loses a hand in this movie? Or maybe that body belongs to a scruffy looking’ nerf herder…

Finally, lets enjoy one exciting image that confirms what we believed, that BB-8 is in fact an astromech droid, perched behind the cockpit of Poe Dameron’s X-Wing as they fly into battle. He is definitely this trilogies R2-D2.

The Force Awakens | Full Trailer And Poster

Big things appear to be happening in Star Wars this weekend, starting tomorrow (Sunday) with an official poster being revealed and then on Monday we should see the theatrical trailer…

This has been rumoured for some time now, with outlets like Collider speculating that the trailer would coincide with the advance ticket sales, also thought to be planned for Monday. This news comes from /Film via io9.

The other thing mentioned in connection to the poster release, is the reveal of the logo treatment for The Force Awakens. I’m a little surprised at this news because a logo already exists and it plastered all over the first wave of The Force Awakens merch! Does this mean the next wave of toys will have alternate packaging? If that’s true I might go buy as much TFA stuff as possible.

How excited are you for the news? Will you be booking your tickets on Monday? What do you expect from a poster? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Star Wars Episode VIII | Gugu Mbatha-Raw Cast?

Very briefly, it looks like Gugu Mbatha-Raw may have been cast in Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII. MakingStarWars.net has the gossip which came from Latino Review.

The Belle and Jupiter Ascending star was recommended to Rian Johnson some time ago, and he has spoken favourably of the actor. It seems that the part in question is one of two female leads for episode VIII, and the casting is subject to chemistry reads with The Force Awakens star John Boyega.

I’m very excited for this news, hopefully within the next few days we will have confirmation of the casting from Lucasfilm and Disney.

In other Star Wars news it looks like we might get a new trailer on or around 19th October. Watch this space for more.

Star Wars Insights | BB-8

Who loves BB-8? Show of hands. Everyone? Ok good. Well what’s better than one BB-8? Loads of ‘em…

When Uncle George was designing Episode I he said, “Jar Jar is the key to all this!” He thought if he nailed Jar Jar Binks, and the kids fell in love with him, then The Phantom Menace would work. Sure Jar Jar was also a test for future technology, like most of George’s movies, it’s never just about the story, it’s about how to tell that story, and the stories that follow. It’s reasonable to say that both endeavours failed. People hated Jar Jar Binks, and the effect didn’t really work that well. In fact, much is being made of how far away from that “method” of film making The Force Awakens really is. George was right, Jar Jar was the key, but unfortunately the door it opened swung both ways and it hit George Lucas in the ass, if I can mix those metaphors.

Jump ahead almost two decades and we have another New Hope. BB-8 is the Jar Jar Binks of the sequel trilogy. Well, at least as far as he is the key. Get BB-8 working and you’ll win over the audience’s hearts and minds. It looks like that’s already happened.

Black Friday

Last November, on Black Friday, the first teaser trailer for a Star Wars movie in ten years hit large and small screens around the world and a couple of things stood out. That voiceover, John Boyega’s Stormtrooper, the Millennium Falcon barrel rolling across a desert plain, that Lightsaber and a tiny little ball shaped robot named BB-8.

Many people suggested he might be CGI, but he was practical. Others thought he might just be a drop in character and not a main feature of the new movie, but that was wrong, he is a central character.

Like R2-D2 and C-3PO before him BB-8 promises to be a driving force in this new film and a favourite with both young and old Star Wars fans alike.

It’s A Con(vention)

Our affection for the little ball droid only deepened when he made his first personal appearance at Star Wars Celebration this past summer, blowing minds when he rolled out on stage, free from and strings or rods. BB-8 was every bit as reel as R2, with whom he shared the stage. It was a glorious moment seeing the crowd react to the little robot.

Force Friday

Jump forward to Force Friday, a major marketing event and BB-8 was waiting in the wings to steal the show. Only this time he would take the form of a tiny, remote control toy, designed by Sphyro, that will be on the top of many a child’s (both big and small) Christmas list this year. The trick worked, BB-8 is a hit, people love him already and we haven’t seen him do anything yet. We know precious little about him.

So what do we know about BB-8? For a start he appears to be an astromech droid. Specifically Poe Dameron’s astromech droid. There was a model of Poe’s X-Wing fighter (the blue one) at celebration that featured a model BB-8 in the socket behind the cockpit. So it’s reasonable to believe he is on Poe’s mission (Oscar Isaac revealed that Poe is sent on a mission by “a certain princess” in the movie), when Poe is taken prisoner by the First Order. Will BB-8 follow in R2’s footsteps (tread marks?) and head off across a desert to get help in fulfilling his duty? Maybe he carries something vital inside (ahem - Lightsaber) inside him in a similar way to R2 carrying the plans to the Death Star.

We also know that BB-8 will be rescued by Daisy Ridley’s Rey, when he is “salvaged” by a Jawa like character. You know Uncle George said these films rhyme? Looks like that’s still true!

BB-8 might prove to be a mix of both R2-D2 and Jar Jar Binks in the new movies. He could be the key to The Force Awakens success. An anthropomorphised unsung hero who captures the hearts of us fans and provides some well timed comic relief. That’s how R2-D2 succeeded in the original movies and that’s what Jar Jar failed (arguably) to do in the prequels.

What’s more, if, like R2 before him, BB-8 is one of many, ubiquitous utility droids, then the sequel movies may have many BB-8s, in all sorts of colours and varieties! So you better start saving the pennies if you want to fill your living room floor with rolling, chirping automatons!

We will kick off this week with some episode VIII and IX news. First up /FIlm have some comments from Ep9 director Colin Trevorrow:

“I obviously can’t talk too much about Star Wars, but the idea of that ‘Universe,’ that word gets thrown around a lot as far as movies are concerned and what people are building, that one’s an actual universe. I think that the size and scope of that. Every kind of story we can think of can be told in the Star Wars universe, because it is endless and boundless.”  – Colin Trevorrow

Star Wars Insights | The Empire Strikes Back Cave

Yoda tells Luke the only thing that waits in the cave is what he takes in with him. For years I thought that meant hate or fear, but now I think it was something more personal, something revelatory, and something that pays off within the run time of The Empire Strikes back…

Ok this might not be much in the way of news for the super fan but I have to admit I have never really given Luke’s vision in the cave a lot of thought. I mean we get that he enters with fear, because he takes his weapons with him, and that fear manifests itself as a dark vision of Vader, but was it just a vision, or a very specific premonition?

First lets deal with the big reveal from the force vision.

Luke Is Vader

So the reveal that Luke is under Vader’s mask, deems like a nod toward a fate that awaits Luke is he is careless with his new found power, but we will shortly learn that the vision of Luke beneath the mask has more to do with his parentage than anything else. Is this Luke’s subconscious warning him of the possible future that awaits him or the fact that he will soon get news that will shake him to the core.

Remember Your Failure At The Cave

Yoda calls the setting for Luke’s Force Vision a cave, John Williams has referred to it as a magical tree, but there have been theories about the setting be an ancient temple, perhaps a Sith Temple. If you look at the header image, or indeed the image below you’ll see some very exact angles on the doorways.

The echoes between Luke’s vision and his confrontation with Vader at Cloud City and undeniable.

This Is No Cave

I would suggest that this isn’t a temple, that the cave is just a cave and the exacting formations we see are a part of Luke’s force vision, or to be more precise, his premonition. Check out the two images below.

There is no mistaking the similarities between the door ways in the cave and the doorways in Cloud City. Was Luke having an incredibly specific vision that detailed the location of the eventual duel? Did Luke even predict the third act reveal that Vader was Luke’s father? I’d argue yes.

So Yoda sent Luke into the cave to have a Force vision that detailed his eventual class with Vader, a clash that would reveal Luke’s true parentage. Was this a Jedi Trial? Is it similar to the visions we can assume Palpatine gave Anakin, visions of Padme’s death, that him to his fall to the Dark Side? Does this mean Anakin failed the Jedi Trials? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

“For me what Secret Cinema represents is that feeling of going to the cinema as a child, It’s where the relationship you have between your seat and the screen is very different to you than the one you have when you’re an adult, and the experience of going to the movies as a child is a much larger than life experience.”  – Fabien Riggall

With villains rising to take the Empire’s place, heroes must rise to oppose them. After becoming stranded by himself in the deserts of Jakku, and meeting up with a girl named Rey, a Stormtrooper named Finn has joined the side of the Resistance. He began his adventure as a part of the New Order, but now he’s one of the few people that can stop them. With a new look, Finn is ready for a new mission. Big reveals about John Boyega’s Finn in The Force Awakens this week. Check out the IGN video above to hear dialogue from the film via a small action figure. It shows Finn talking with an american accent (or no accent if you happen to be american) and in amongst the phrases is a hint at Finn’s Stormtrooper designation. Finn uses the designation FN2187. Is this Finn’s designation? The inclusion of FN in the designation seems to indicate a connection, but its the 2187 that interests me more. 2187 was Princess Leia’s cellblock number in A New Hope. Does this indicate that Finn is assigned to a cellblock? Specifically the cellblock where Poe ends up a prisoner, leading to Finn breaking him out to secure his own escape… Phew. Deep breath. I strongly feel that this is a deliberate nod in that direction. Peter over at /Film also noticed the connection, see our twitter chat below.

StarWars7News are suggesting that Felicity Jones might be playing a comic book character call Aphra in Rogue One. Im not sure the time line works. Read the quote below:

“The third issue in the series introduced readers to a brand new character by the name of Dr. Aphra, a twenty-something-yr-old droid programmer and adventurer whose introduction into SW canon was reminiscent of that of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark – ducking and diving through lasers to obtain her prize, accidentally setting off the defense system, and barely escaping with her life as a Clone Wars era destroyer droid barreled after her. Vader quickly recognizes her talents and hires her to aid him in his efforts to get back his master’s favor after his failure at the Death Star. Aphra proves to be a valuable asset to Vader, albeit chatty and naïve at times”

J.J. was quiet this week He did speak to ABC News. via /Film

“That was a constant in the production of the movie: moments where we would all look around and realize what we were doing and gasp a little bit and then dive back in. When you’re on the set of the Millennium Falcon or staring into the eyes of C3PO giving direction, it’s pretty easy to have that fanatic part of you bubble up. But our job was to be there to tell this story, not to be a fanboy.” … “What was incredible from my point of view was how apparently easily they flipped back into these roles. I knew for a fact, for example, that Harrison Ford was going to be in this movie, but I couldn’t be certain that Han Solo would be. Meaning, I hadn’t seen Han Solo return after nearly 40 years, either. And it wasn’t until we got on set that I got my answer. It was a remarkable thing to see how effortlessly Harrison Ford became Han Solo again.”  – J.J. Abrams

The Daily Mail are reporting that Lucasfilm are planning to use a CGI Peter Cushing in Rogue One so that we will see Grand Moff Tarkin in the new movie. Click the image below for more details. Some of you may remember that this was considered prior to The Phantom Menace, when artists started looking at footage of a young Alec Guinness for Obi-Wan in that movie. I think they would be better of casting an actor in the role and have them emulate Mr Cushing’s performance. To paraphrase Kevin Smith, “just have someone call him Tarkin and we’re halfway home…”

This week J.J. revealed a lot about Kylo Renn. Specifically that the new villain isn’t a Sith Lord. Read J.J.’s comments below:

“Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”  – J.J. Abrams

The director also had comments about The First Order and Supreme Leader Snoke. Read those comments below:

“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again? What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”  – J.J. on The First Order

“…a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”  – J.J. describing Snoke

So Kylo Renn is aligned wit hSupreme Leader Snoke, but isn’t a Sith and Snoke is a powerful figure in the Dark Side, so are the Knights Of Renn Dark Side users? Will that serve to undermine the Sith? Could this mean the Knights of Renn are the same as The Sith, but they are legion, where the Sith limit themselves to two? So many questions…

J.J. gives us some details on BB-8 and how he came into being. Click the image below for the low down…

He was also giving some details on Darth Vader, and how the Dark Lord of the Sith may be perceived in The Force Awaken, and how he may inspire The First Order. Click here for more.

If reports are true, Mads Mikkelsen is in talks with Marvel to play and unconfirmed role in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie.

Mads was originally cast in Thor: The Dark Wold as Malekith but dropped out due to scheduling issues but it would seem both Mads and Marvel are looking to rekindle some magic for the sorcerer supreme.

With Baron Mordo already the big bad for the movie it would seem futile to use someone with Mikkelsen’s ability in a secondary role, so it may be he is being set up as a future antagonist.

The cast of Doctor Strange is beginning to shape up to be a powerhouse of actors, real actors. We’re not talking your everyday blow shit up, popcorn movie kind of actors but award winning thesps. Doctor Strange will materialise on our screens on November 4th 2016 with Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, Chiwetel Ejiofor as the villainous Baron Mordo, and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One.

Check back for more Doctor Strange news as it arrives.

We’re not saying we are counting the days to the release of Star Wars The Force Awakens, but:

We have launched a dedicated This Week In Star Wars Facebook Page in preparation for Star Wars Celebration 2016. The idea is to build a community of Star Wars fans and do a meet up at the event! Lets kick off this week with that D23 poster, I wrote a piece the morning after this poster dropped, which you can read here. I love this image, even though many people are hating on it. I’ve read other reports hitting some of the same points I did, bit many feel we won’t see Tatooine in this movie, I suggest these elements indicate otherwise.

Drew Stuzan is as much a part of the Star Wars experience to me as Lucas or Williams. The lead in to a new movie just isn’t the same without those iconic images, and now Mr Struzan has made an interesting comment about The Force Awakens. The artist states that the new movie could very well be the best entry in the series! Read those comments in full here.

Who agrees that Daisy Ridley is utterly charming? John Boyega is equally as cool!

Both are immortalised in new action figures for Disney Infinity’s latest game.

Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Sneak Peeks and Preview at NYCC

Fans attending New York Comic Con on Thursday, October 8th will receive an exclusive sneak peek of what’s to come in the second season of Star Wars Rebels with a panel featuring special guests plus a preview screening of two new episodes from the series.

As the second season of Star Wars Rebels opens, the crew of the Ghost is now considered a very real threat to the Empire and has caught the attention of Darth Vader himself. Undeterred, the rebels seek out old friends and add powerful allies to their cause, forming the beginnings of a more formidable alliance against the Empire. To stop them, Vader will dispatch new agents to hunt down their growing coalition, determined to snuff them out before they can ignite a galaxy to rebellion.

The Star Wars Rebels panel will take place on the Empire Stage from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and will be followed by an exclusive screening of two new episodes later on the same stage, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. These all-new episodes will feature the series debut of Captain Rex, Captain Gregor and Commander Wolffe – three clones from the previous Star Wars animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They join another fan favorite from The Clone Wars – Ahsoka Tano – who made her Star Wars Rebels debut in the final episode of season 1.

Poe Dameron will be the leader of Black Squadron in The Force Awakens.

MSW have some update images of what appears to be the entrance to the Yavin IV base from A New Hope, being built for Rogue One. See below.

Could there be a direct link to the original Star Wars movie in Rogue One? One that deals with a character who had most of his scenes cut? See the tweet below:

/Film take a closer look at the Rogue One heroes here.

I’m tucking this news in he Rogue News section because I think it might be relevant. Lucasfilm has trademarked some names that previously occupied the expanded universe. Read more here, but the name that interested me was Mon Destra. For a while I have suspected that Rogue One will feature Mon Mothma, and depending on the time line, I wondered if maybe Felicity Jones would be playing Mon Mothma. Perhaps Mon Destra is her original name? I mentioned on the Kessel Run TubeCast (featured somewhere below this!) that if you get a little creative with the numbers Miss Jones playing Mon Mothma can work. We are assuming Rogue One hands off immediately to Star Wars A New Hope, but the Death Star is nearly twenty years old in A New Hope, giving us plenty of time to see these Rogues, lead by Mon Mothma (Destra?) carry out their heist. Read my theory here.

Blastr.com have listed the 10 thing they want to see in Rogue One. Right now I’d settle for that teaser trailer…

Perhaps these are the droids you’re looking for especially if you need a new credit card. via Inside The Magic.

One you get the card perhaps you can book a flight on the plane below. Try to reserve seat BB-8…

I started recording random Star Wars theories during my drive to the day job. So thought I’d launch a YouTube only podcast (or TubeCast if you will) and put them out as frequently as possible. I will include them here every week. Get the latest below:

JJ talks to EW about the first time he saw Star Wars. There is a video there, check it out here.

This past week JJ reportedly let us know that the current edit of The Force Awakens clocks in at 124 minutes, making it one of the shortest Star Wars movies yet.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

One thing that came out of D23 that, disappointed me was a tiny detail, but a crucial one. There is a name change for the still quite new Anthology Series…

The Anthology Series will now be known as Star Wars Stories. So the movie previously known as Star Wars Anthology Rogue One will now be known as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Subsequent entries will no doubt follow suit, meaning we will get Han Solo: A Star Wars Story in a couple of years. At least we won’t be cursed with a Star Wars Origins: Han Solo, because we know what happens to Origins films. Yes I’m looking at you, Wolverine!

Personally I liked the Anthology brand very much indeed, so this is a little disappointing for me, but, having said that, there is a benefit to having the phrase Rogue One take the lead in the film’s name , after all, I’m pretty sure we all already refer to this movie as, simply, Rogue One.

What do you make of the new title? Did you like the Anthology idea? Are you getting Blue Harvest flashbacks? Leave your thoughts in the comments below…

Thanks for reading,

Marc
